What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for, since the last annual service review. This included: - The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people who live at the home, staff who work for the service, and health and social care professionals involved in the care of people who live at Woodheyes. - Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened to people living in the home. These are called Regulation 37 notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. The AQAA told us that the home environment has been improved over the last 12 months with refurbishment and redecoration of rooms. We were told there will be further improvements over the next 12 months with an extension which will mean all bedrooms having en-suite facilities, and new bath/shower rooms. The service hopes to improve the garden so that people who live at the home can enjoy a sensory garden and a courtyard which will have a covered raised pond. The AQAA also told us that staff have had training to support people living at the home coming to the end of their life (palliative care); and have a greater awareness of safeguarding adult issues. It told us that all senior staff are now Moving and Handling trainers. There are 20 permanent staff at Woodheyes, and of the 20, 12 have a National Vocational Qualification in Care to Level 2 or above. The AQAA informed us that the service has received two complaints, neither of which has been upheld. There have been no safeguarding investigations in the last 12 months. We received 17 surveys back from people who live at Woodheyes care home, and were mostly completed with the help and support of a relative. 16 people said they always Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 get the medical care they need, with one person saying they usually get the medical care they need. All of those who replied said they either always or usually liked the meals at Woodheyes. Most people replying also said they either always or usually have activities they can take part in, although one person replied sometimes to this. 16 people said the home was either always or usually fresh and clean, although one person replied that it was never fresh and clean. Typical positive comments received were: food is always good..visitors always welcome the staff are friendly and warm to the residents and guests alike the care and helpfulness of the staff is first class...they are lovely and I couldnt wish for a better home the home is clean The care given by the carers is exemplary, their patience is wonderful even under provocation and I cannot speak too highly of them When people were asked how the service could be made better, responses were: more exercise to music, yoga sometimes there seems to be a lack of staffing in the afternoons At times the staffing levels are too tight, especially when recourse has to be made to agency staff occasionally it is difficult to locate staff a separate room for telephone conversations a foot stool would be nice Only one person felt that the home did not smell fresh and clean and their comment was make the home smell fresh and not like urine We received 10 replies from staff who work at Woodheyes. Most staff felt that the manager gave them regular support, and seven out of 10 felt there was usually enough staff to meet the individual needs of people using the service. Nine staff felt they always had up to date information about the needs of people they supported, with one reporting they only sometimes had up to date information. Comments from staff included: the residents are treated very well in all aspects every step is taken to keep all residents happy, healthy it promotes dignity and respect and end of life care. Woodheyes provides training for
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 staff to deal/understand dementia provides an excellent choice of meals..encourages and provides entertainment and activities any concerns regarding residents are dealt with straight away We received three surveys from health and social care professionals, none of whom had any concerns about the service. We looked at the Regulation 37 notifications sent to us by the service and were satisfied that the service had acted appropriately with each incident. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are going to continue to monitor the service, and will carry out a key inspection as part of our monitoring process. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of service being provided to people who live at Woodheyes care home. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
