What the care home does well Our inspection confirmed that the manager has continued to improve the service since our last inspection. Requirements we had made at our last inspection had been addressed. There is a `can do` attitude and risks are managed positively to help people using the service lead the life they want. We examined the way people have their support planned and found that the staff develop a support plan with each individual, these were kept up to date and showed that they included comprehensive risk assessments. The staff demonstrated through written and photographic records that they understand the importance of enabling younger adults to achieve their goals, follow their interests and be integrated into community life and leisure activities in a way that is directed by the person using the service. Healthcare is managed safely. Individual plans clearly record people`s personal and healthcare needs and detail how they will be delivered. People living there told us they had access to the Doctor, Dentist and Opthalmologist and we saw how staff hold a separate record of all interventions from external specialists involved with each individual. People have access to equipment they need to support them safely. We saw how aids and equipment are provided to encourage maximum independence for people using services. One person told us how they had been helped to become more independently mobile.Medicines are managed safely. The home has a sustained record of full compliance with the administration, safekeeping and disposal of medicines. We looked at the records of medicine administration and storage facilities and found they were fully compliant with the law. Staff had prepared a medicine file for each person which provided valuable information on how people needed to be supported with medicines, what they were used for and how to monitor the effects to ensure people were receiving their medicines safely. People told us they received their medicines as prescribed. The staff team are properly trained. We saw how each staff member has retained a personal development portfolio which provided us with a comprehensive record of their training and competency appraisals. This demonstrated that staff receive appropriate training and development of their role. People we spoke with at the inspection and those responding to our `Have Your Say` surveys tell us they are happy at the home and can live the life they choose with the support of the staff team. The home is well managed and we saw that there are quality assurance systems in place that ensure the home meets its stated objectives and continues to improve the experiences of people who live there. We undertook this inspection as part of the work we have remaining under the Care Standards Act 2000 before we use the new Law, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 which will mean we work with services in different ways. This service was given a 3 star, excellent rating in 2007, and we have not received any information about the service through complaints, safeguarding or from other agencies such as the Local Authority or the Primary Care Trusts which gives us any cause for concern. Prior to our visit an analysis of all the information we have received about the home since our last inspection was undertaken. We looked at what the manager had told us in the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) and the responses we received from our Have Your Say surveys which we sent to residents at the home. We used evidence from our observations, from speaking to people about their experience of living at the home, talked to staff about their understanding of peoples needs and the training they receive to support them in their role.
