What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, which was carried out on the 10th October 2008. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It gave us the information we asked for and, from this, we were able to judge that the home is still providing a good service. The AQAA told us what the service does well. For example, they have started to provide information for people using the service in a format which makes it easier for them to understand. This helps to make sure people are kept informed and up to date about the home and their care. We were also told that the home provides a safe, warm and friendly, environment. After the last inspection we made two requirements. One was to have a hand basin fitted in the first floor toilet and the second was to develop a system for measuring the quality of the service. After the inspection the manager wrote to tell us that both of these had been completed. The AQAA told us about some additional ways the service had improved over the last year. For example, everyone at the home has had an annual health check. This helps to ensure that health problems are monitored and any new health needs can be quickly identified and treated. The service has also introduced some complementary therapies, such as aromatherapy, which has benefited some of the people using the service. The AQAA included several plans for next year, which all focus on improving the quality of life for people living at Worstead Lodge. At the time of preparing this Annual Service Review we had not received any surveys from the people using the service, therefore we were unable to report on their views. The manager told us that the home had carried out their own survey quite recently and were waiting for the results to be collated and published. Five staff working at Worstead Lodge completed surveys. Their responses were mainly positive. For Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 example, about training, support and communication within the staff team. Some staff made suggestions about where training could be further improved and we shared this information with the manager. The AQAA told us that people using the service are encouraged to speak out if they are not happy about anything. Over the next year they plan to develop an easy read complaints procedure to assist people further. The home had not received any complaints in the past year and none had been sent directly to the commission. From all the information we have received we have concluded that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Under the Care Quality Commission current inspection frequencies we must carry out a key inspection within three years of the last key inspection. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
