Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 9 What we found:
We visited the service in response to the outcome of a safeguarding meeting. The safeguarding alert referred allegations that a member of staff had roughly handled and inappropriately restrained a person living at Cauldon Place, these allegations had been made by member of staff. The referral had been made by Kay Trow, the registered manager of Cauldon Place. There were additional concerns about the delay in reporting the original allegations and also that the alleged perpetrator had been dismissed from the service while the allegations were being investigated. We have visited the Human Resources office prior to this visit, to look at how the organisation ensures that proper checks are carried out for new staff and to talk about some of the concerns mentioned above. We asked to see training records to ensure that staff have received training in safeguarding vulnerable people and the training requirements of the last key inspection visit have been met. We talked to the care manager and senior staff about the frequency of staff supervision and the content of it. We looked at the care records of the individual identified in the safeguarding meeting and the flat he lived in. What the care home does well:
We saw that the Human resources manager has now introduced a check list for each new member of staff, to ensure that she knows when pre employment checks have been sent for and when they are received. We saw from the training records that Autism training has taken place since the last key inspection visit and further training is planned, we hope to see that before the next key inspection visit that all staff have attended this training. We also saw that staff have received Safeguarding and Abuse training and training in the management of challenging behaviour. We saw that staff appraisals have been carried out and have been told that staff have received individual supervision sessions. We saw that staff meetings are carried out regularly. We saw that care records clearly identify the the needs of individuals. We saw that risk assessments have been carried out and behaviour management plans are in place. We looked at how the service collects information on the use and frequency of restraint or challenging behaviour.
