An unannounced visit was carried out on the 20th April 2010. This was a random inspection to see if Stourbridge Road were continuing to provide an excellent service to the people living there. The manager of the service had previously completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). The AQAA is a self assessment form that looks at how well Stourbridge Road meets the needs of the people using the service. Some of the managers comments have been included within this inspection report. We also received completed survey forms from people who use the service and staff who work at Stourbridge Road. Information from surveys and AQAA helps us to understand how well the service is meeting the needs of the people who use the service. We have not received any concerns or complaints about the service in the last 12 months. What the care home does well:
We spent time with two residents, the manager and staff at the home during the inspection visit. We looked at the care provided and the records for two people who use the service to see what life was like for people living at Stourbridge Road. This process is called case tracking. We saw that detailed assessments had been completed by the manager before they agreed to start providing care to each person. This made sure that they had all the information they needed to develop a plan of care for staff to follow. We saw that care plans had been agreed by the individual or their representative. Care plans are very informative and give clear details about each persons preferred routines and the support they need. Care plans are completed in formats to make sure everyone can understand or has access to information about their care and how staff are to support them. We looked at the complaints log and talked with the manager about complaints they had received. The manager confirmed they had received no complaints and stated in the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that the Complaints Policy and procedures and the people we support each have a pictorial format. The families and the people we support are encouraged to express any concerns. We looked at two staff recruitment and training files. We saw that thorough checks had been carried out before these people had started work at the home. This makes sure that only suitable people are employed. We saw that people received an induction before they started work and on going training is provided relevant to the support staff give to people living at Stourbridge Road. The manager stated in the AQAA that there are plans for staff to complete POVA and DOLS training where they have not already done so. Staff
Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 confirmed they are well supported and have the information they need to meet individual needs. We spent time talking with the manager and how the service has developed since her appointment. There is evidence of continued development in the support given to people living at the home with the emphasis on helping people to make choices in their everyday living. In our view Stourbridge Road continues to provide an excellent service to the people living there.
