Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received about Briar Court since the last inspection on 27th January 2009. We looked at the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a selfassessment document that the manager has completed to tell us how well outcomes are being met for the people who use this care home. We sent surveys to residents and staff to ask for their views of how well the care home provides the service. We received three surveys from residents. We have also looked at any other information we have received, such as events or changes that the service has told us about. These are called notifications and it is important that care services keeps us up-to-date about anything that might affect the people who live here or the running of the home. We have also looked at the previous inspection report to see what improvements the home has made since then. What has this told us about the service? Briar Court sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It gave us all the information we asked for. The AQAA shows that the home has continued to make improvements to its service since the last key inspection. The AQAA shows that the homes information pack (called a service users guide) has been improved. It is now in easy-read format to help people understand it. There are also plans for this information pack to be improved with more details about opportunities in leisure, educational courses, and support. The home has also developed easy-read books about healthy eating and self-medication so that the people who live here can learn more about these areas, if they want. Five people who live here have recently achieved City & Guilds courses at a local college. The AQAA also shows that people have had support to become more independent. For example, two people who are in voluntary employment can now access their jobs without needing support from staff. The home has plans to continue with more holidays abroad for the people who live here. There are also plans to develop day services so that people could enjoy more activities in the local community. The AQAA shows that there are continued improvements to the premises. There have been new carpets and decoration to bedrooms and to lounges. These were chosen by the residents. Also the home has again achieved a 5* rating from Environmental Health for its excellent food safety. The AQAA shows that there are plans to turn one bathroom into a wet room to make it more easily accessible for the people who live here. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Briar Court has achieved the Investors In People award for its good staff support, and has achieved another quality award for the 8th year running. The AQAA states that Briar Court was recently named as 7th best employer in the Nursing Times top 100 employers. All the support staff at this home have attained, or are working towards, national qualifications in care (called NVQ level 2 and 3). The three surveys show that people feel that they receive a good service. One person said, They help us with cooking, and they help you stay independent. Another survey said, The staff give me lots of support. One survey felt that the home did well at trips out and getting looked after. The home has dealt with and resolved two complaints. There have also been two safeguarding adults alerts. The home worked well with social and health professionals about these matters, and took appropriate action to put things right as quickly as possible. This shows that the home takes complaints and allegations very seriously and acts on them to prevent the risk of harm to residents. In discussions, social care professionals said they were satisfied with the way that the home had managed these matters. Our judgement is that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
