The inspection took place over part of one day with one regulation inspector. The manager was present during the visit and we spoke with residents, staff, a district nurse and a visitor. We visited all areas of the home briefly and checked a selection of records. Although the home is currently registered for 22 people, changes have been made to the bedroom usage. There are now 19 single occupancy bedrooms and an additional quiet room available for residents to use. What the care home does well:
Most current residents now have some level of confusion and staff at the home have all had training in dementia care. We found that all areas of care provision in the home has been reconsidered by staff and the residents are receiving person centred care, underpinned by good person centred recording. Care planning now shows the involvement of the individual concerned and shows the individual choices and aims of each resident in a user friendly format. Information about the home is also in an easy read format, enabling any new residents to understand what living in the home will be like. We spoke with the district nurse who was visiting several residents on the day. They confirmed that the home always provides appropriate care for residents and are currently caring well for one resident who is very ill. The staff all work as a key worker to named residents and complete records to show how the individual health and social needs of each person are being met. Staffing levels are very good, and this allows residents to be taken out for short or longer trips, which many of them clearly enjoy. The visitor we spoke with said that residents really enjoy the walks they go for with staff. The manager confirmed that staffing levels allow a selection of walks to take place, and the staff offer short, medium and longer walks according to residents choice and ability. An activity co-ordinator works in the home most days and care staff also provide daily stimulation. During the inspection an aromatherapist was working with residents and one care worker was sitting and reading with one resident. The manager said that she has applied to the Social Care Institute of Excellence and hopes to have two computers installed under the get connected scheme. These computers are specially designed for people who have a level of confusion and will provide additional stimulation for people who use this service. We saw evidence of the monthly residents meetings which take place at the home and the staff we spoke with confirmed that residents take a full part in making choices about daily life in the home. The manager said that residents are now involved in interviewing the college students who come to work at the home from time to time on college placements. One resident has also been involved in reviewing the homes written policies to confirm they are acceptable to the people who use the service. We saw evidence that residents had taken part in the recent national elections. Some had used a postal vote but most had gone out to vote with staff, and had then stayed out for tea.
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 There is a stable staff team and the manager said that there has not been a staff vacancy at the home for many years. Staff are well trained, which means that residents benefit from a professional and competent work force. Four care workers have completed NVQ 4 training and one has completed NVQ level 3. Every member of staff has completed NVQ 2 training. The deputy manager has also qualified as an NVQ assessor. The staff at the home have strong links with the Health Protection Unit, and are part of a pilot scheme to implement higher standards of infection control into care homes for the benefit of all those living in residential care.
