What the care home does well The service has always kept us fully informed of anything that has occurred since the last key Inspection. The practice regarding the planning and delivery of care means that the residents can be sure that their health and personal care needs will be met. Meals and dietary requirements are managed well. The staff are supportive and encourage the residents to make choices in their daily living. The providers make sure that they involve the residents in discussions about their care and address any issues that result from these discussions. What the care home could do better: Ensure that all residents who have prn (as required) medicines prescribed to them have care plans in place to justify continued use. Make sure that the RN who mentors the students who are on placements from the UEA checks and counter signs the care plans that the students have written just to ensure all specific needs are met. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: A visit was made to this home on May 6th 2010. We found that the staff are fully committed in supporting the residents to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives as far as they possibly can: people who use the service are encouraged to make choices and make informed decisions about the risks they wish to make in their daily lives. The care plans we looked at were based on a thorough assessment process and referred to all assessed needs. The plans were person centered and contained bibliographical content to assist in the care planning process. The care plans were up to date and there was evidence of evaluation and changes made when needs altered. The care plans contained risk assessments and those who were at risk of falls had additional assessments in place. There was evidence in the care plans we looked at to tell us that the residents had been involved in their care planning. There was also evidence that the service seeks advice from other professionals when needed and this was confirmed by a visiting dietitian who told us that the staff were always receptive to advice that they give in relation to the nutritional needs of some residents. The three residents we spoke with were all very positive about the care they received and made comments such as I have improved since I have been here, there is always something to do, well its a whole new ball game since I came. Another resident said the care is still good here and the nurses are good, I cannot think of anywhere I would rather be. One resident told us as far as these places go, I like it here and most of the staff are very kind. The residents also told us that they chose what they did and they said that they get to go out and also like sitting outside when the weather is suitable. When asked what the food was like one resident said it was spot on and another showed us the weeks menus which had plenty of choices for each day; the resident told us that the chef checks every day if the meal was alright and discusses the next days menu with them. They also told us that they do not have to have what is on the menu and they choose where they want to eat their meals. We noted that the administration of medicines for these three residents had been managed well, however we have made a requirement that all residents who have been prescribed prn (as required) medicines have care plans in place for this activity. We saw four letters from relatives pointing out many positive aspects of the care that their relatives had received or were still receiving, the positive remarks were also about the whole staff team. We looked at the results of surveys which had been carried out by an independent company; the surveys had been completed by the residents, relatives and staff and most were positive comments made in all areas about the quality of the service that the home offers.
