What the care home does well

People are provided with a pleasant place to live and all areas were clean and comfortable. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. There are good relationships between the people living in the home and the staff.The manager is well aware of people`s individual needs. There is information available to staff as to how each person communicates, for example how people will react if they are happy or upset. The staff team are stable and fully aware of people`s needs. Every effort is made to ensure people can access activities of their choice and they are encouraged to make choices and decisions in all aspects of their lives. The staff consult with and follow advice given by health care professionals to help ensure each person receives appropriate care and support. Each person`s needs are reviewed on a regular basis. Care and support is given in a sensitive and caring manner to help ensure people are well supported and valued. Good training is provided for the staff to support them to carry out their roles effectively and to ensure individual needs can be met.

What the care home could do better:

The organisation should ensure that plans to review the layout of the kitchen continue to ensure it is more appropriate to meet the needs of the people living in the home and the staff. This will help ensure people can have their meals in comfort and be supported by the staff.

The home is an attractive listed building and blends in with the local community. There are four single bedrooms and one double and a passenger lift is installed to help people get to the first floor. It is close to local shops, amenities and transport networks. There is an attractive garden area to the front of the building and off street parking. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: A random inspection was carried out as part of the Commissions programme of visiting good services to ensure they are continuing to maintain their standards. During the visit we looked at a sample of the individual records of the casre being given to the people living in the home. They were up to date and gave the staff good information to meet individual needs. The care plans are evaluated each month to ensure any changing needs are met. Risk assessments were in place and these are regularly reviewed. Each person living in the home has person centred plan which includes their likes and dislikes, goals and aspirations, significant events in their life and photographs of family and friends. The case files contain a record of outings and activities enjoyed by each individual. Activities include music therapy, aromatherapy, shopping, eating out, going for walks and visiting local places of interest. One person visits a day centre where they enjoy arts and crafts. Examples of their work were displayed around the home. People are encouraged to take part in community based activities and are well supported to keep in contact with family and friends. The premises were comfortable, clean and hygienic. The manager said that plans have been made to refit the kitchen and an occupational therapist is to visit to help decide on the best layout. The manager said the gardener visits on a regular basis. The garden was tidy and garden furniture had been provided so people could enjoy sitting outside in the summer. Since the last inspection a specialist bath has been provided which is more suitable to meet the needs of the people living in the home. The manager confirmed that staff are provided with appropriate training to carry out their roles effectively. This includes mandatory health and safety training, safeguarding vulnerable adults, safe handling of medications and Downs Syndrome and dementia. All staff in the home have achieved a National Vocational Qualification, Level 2 or above. Peoples health needs are monitored by the staff and prompt referrals are made to relevant health care professionals when necessary.
