Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection at the home was 28th October 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We sent 15 surveys to people who live at the home and their relatives. Three people returned these to us and their comments are included within this report. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the home, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Information about how the home had managed any complaints or safeguarding concerns. The previous key inspection report. What has this told us about the service? We received the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) before the date the manager had to send it to us. The manager told us that they had completed this as they knew we would be requesting the information. We got good information from the AQAA as it was detailed with clear evidence of how the home has improved since our last key inspection. The home is able to think of new and creative ways to make sure that they do things that matter to people. Examples of this are that people who live there are now involved in the recruitment of new staff. This means that people help to decide who will be delivering their care and will be supported by staff that they like. A residents committee has been implemented and people meet monthly so that they can be involved in decisions about how the home is run. We received surveys from three people who live at the home; they told us they were happy living there and knew who to talk to if they were unhappy. Comments from people included: They try hard to fulfill all their obligations The general nursing care is very good The majority of carers are first class and do their job with pride The owners put on some nice special occasions and my first Christmas last year was Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 very lovely The home told us that they have made improvements since our last visit including: A wet room is being installed on the middle floor so that people can access a shower without having to go up or downstairs. Work continues on improving the decor throughout the home to enhance the environment in which people live. New mattresses have been purchased to help minimise the risk of people developing sore skin. The menu has been revised with the help of people who live at the home so that they should receive food that they like. A new activity coordinator has been appointed; there has been a garden party in the summer and trips to Walsall Illuminations. Further trips are planed for people who want to go on them. Staff have received training including the Mental Capacity Act, Advocacy and Deprivation Of Liberty Safeguards. The home told us they have produced information leaflets for the people who live there. This should mean that staff know how to meet peoples needs and protect them from harm. The AQAA told us how the home wants to improve further. This shows that the management is constantly reviewing the home to ensure that it is run in the best interests of the people who live there. The home told us that they have not received any complaints in the last 12 months. We have received one complaint about the activities provided by the home. We asked the owner to look into this using their own complaints procedure. The owner responded in a timely manner and provided good evidence of how the complaint had been looked into. The home has made one safeguarding referral to ensure that the people living in the home are protected from harm. The home tells us about things that have happened there and show that they manage issues well. They work with us and have shown that they continue to provide good outcomes for the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We think the quality of the home might have improved since the last key inspection. We will do a key inspection by the 28th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living at the home.
