What the care home does well The acting manager was supported on this visit by the registered manager. The managers confirmed that the health and safety training and checks were all completed The Quality Assurance feedback included: `Staff are friendly and cheerful` `Home is clean and warm` `Residents look well cared for` `Mum has `grown` with the company and kindness of professional staff. She is no longer lonely. Her sense of humour has returned and she is no longer anxious.` `I think the staff are fabulous with my Mum and I am pleased that she is in such good hands` `I am generally happy with my Fathers care and the staff are always happy` What the care home could do better: Some assessment documents had not been signed or dated by the assessor. Social care plans were not completed to demonstrate the input that was actually being given and some of which was evidenced on the day of the visit. Individual Maps of Life should be completed to demonstrate the persons past, likes and dislikes and hobbies etc which can then be incorporated in their social care plan. Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 7 Brief description of the care home Maple Lodge was opened in October 1999. The home was purpose built and is a detached care home, which stands in its own grounds. The home is registered to admit 40 people who require personal care only. There are 40 single bedrooms all with en suite facilities and a passenger lift is available. Two bright and spacious lounges are available with two lounges with dining areas. There is a hobbies room which doubles up as a hairdressing salon on the first floor. In Lilly suite there is easy access, through French doors, for people to enjoy the attractive, enclosed grounds with established trees; seating has been provided, some with pergola cover. In the reception area there is a hospitality, quiet lounge for all to use. A bus service runs from the end of the road half a mile from where the home is situated into the centre of Stafford, where all local services and shops are to be found. The registered manager and the acting manager were both in the home on the day of the inspection. The Service User Guide and Statement of Purpose had both been updated to show that an acting manager was now in place. All individual care records were up to date and reflected the personal care being given. Some gaps in care records were related to social care not being documented sufficiently to demonstrate the actual life style of the individual. Two formal complaints had been received in the previous six months and these were both resolved. Two strategy meetings had been held and the issues resolved which were relating to safeguarding. The home was very clean and tidy and bedrooms were seen to be personalised and homely. Corridors were decorated with sensory items and tasteful pictures. People that used the service appeared content and occupied. Some people were enjoying listening to music and some were seen walking around the pretty garden which was planted out and attractively decorated. Staff levels were appropriate to meet the needs of the people living in the home. The activity organiser took several people out of the home for a walk before the weather got too hot. PAT dog was due to visit the home later that day.
