We undertook a random inspection to check that the service had met the requirements we had made at the last key inspection. Following the last key inspection the service provided us with an improvement plan to show how they would address the issues we had raised. The service also sent us copies of documents to confirm their compliance with regulations. This random lasted approximately three hours. During that time we looked at a range of documents, spoke to staff and the manager. At the previous inspection we identified that the service did not have the necessary plans and risk assessments in place and that the staff did not have the training and knowledge to be able to meet the needs of people that live there. During this inspection we saw evidence that staff had received a range of training including relating to managing challenging behaviour and autism. Staff have also had training in working with people with a learning disability. Several are now undertaking NVQ training. We also saw that the care planning had improved. Person centred plans are now in place that show the staff how to provide the support that people need in the way they want. These plans include needs relating to their personal care and social care. The plans also contain information peoples likes and dislikes and show issues that are important to people. We did advice the service to develop the information about peoples communication needs. The service has also put health action plans in place. We had previously identified that proper plans were not in place to address any incidents of challenging behaviour. These are now in place. We did advice the service on how these could be improved to further develop the information for staff. The service has developed its risk management systems. We saw risk assessments completed for issues such as bathing, going out in the car, incidents of challenging behaviour and for using kitchen equipment. We spent some time talking to staff. They confirm that they have received a range of training including managing challenging behaviour. The staff tell us that they now feel more confident in dealing with such incidents. The staff could describe how they should respond to incidents. They also understand why people may be violent and aggressive. At the last key inspection we identified that a staff member had started work prior to obtaining a Criminal Records Bureau check and there was no risk assessment in place. The service has now addressed this issue. Previously some of the staff had not had the necessary health and safety training. On this visit we saw that this had been addressed.
