What the care home does well

The registered manager and staff have created a welcoming informal, and homely environment for the residents. Service users are treated with respect and actively involved in making choices.

The home continues to provide all service users with a consistent high standard of care and personal support.

The premises comprise of a detached bungalow with a large well-maintained garden, situated in a residential area in Margate. The home is within a short walking distance of local amenities such as the health centre, shops, churches, library and day centres. All residents healthcare needs are accessed within the community. The needs of the three residents are such that they all require assistance with transport, and the home has its own minibus. Staffing comprises a registered manager, and support staff, with regular support from area and regional management. Service users know their assessed and changing needs and personal goals are reflected in their individual Plan. Service users make decisions about their lives with assistance as needed. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. The Commission considers Standards 6, 7 and 9 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 6 and 9 The care planning system is clear and consistent, providing staff with the information they need to ensure that the service users needs are fully met. Risk assessments are clear and consistent, protecting staff and service users. EVIDENCE: Daily care plans viewed identified the individual needs of each service user, and were presented in a format that was easily read. Detailed information regarding activities, health and personal care needs, was found to have been recorded daily by support workers. Staff on duty had a clear understanding as to the individual needs of all residents. Service users have opportunities for personal development. Service users are able to take part in age, peer and culturally appropriate activities. Service users are part of the local community. Service users’ rights are respected and responsibilities recognised in their daily lives. Service users are offered a healthy diet and enjoy their meals and mealtimes. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12 Links with the community are good which supports Service Users to develop social, educational and recreational opportunities. EVIDENCE: Individual care plans viewed contained a structured weekly activity plan. Service Users are supported to undertake a wide variety of activities both within the home and the local community. On the day of the inspection two service users were getting ready to go Christmas shopping and another service user was due to attend a local day centre. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24 and 30 The standard of the environment is good providing service users with an attractive place to live. EVIDENCE: A tour of the home was undertaken, a good standard of decoration and furnishing was found throughout the home. Communal rooms within the home consist of a large living room, dining room and kitchen with low- level worktops. Fixtures and fittings were of good quality and domestic in nature. A programme of redecoration is currently underway. Works already completed were of a high standard. Service users were seen to have personalised their bedrooms. Staff spoken to confirmed that service users are actively involved in choosing the colour scheme for their bedrooms. A sensory board has been placed within the living room, enabling service users to enjoy this activity within comfortable surroundings. The home was found to be clean and held no offensive odours.
