What the care home does well

Mrs Wenlock has taken seriously the concerns that were raised at the Key Inspection and has made changes to address these. She reported that she is spending time developing the systems in the home to help ensure standards are improved and maintained in the future.

What the care home could do better:

When a prescribed medication dose is not given the information on administration charts could be made clear do explain the reason for this. A system should be set up to help ensure there are no gaps in the records. The medication procedure should be expanded to include details of how staff are to administer medication. A clearer record should be held to show all new staff work with a named mentor during their induction, and those who start before a CRB check is returned do not provide any unsupervised personal care until the check is received.

The service is registered to accommodate 14 older people, male or female, who may have needs arising from the normal ageing process or from dementia related conditions. The Statement of Purpose confirms that the home cannot accommodate residents who may have behaviours that significantly impact on other residents in a negative way. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: The registration of the Home has been increased from 13 beds to 14 during 2009. There is currently an electronic error that means both bed numbers are being shown above. This will be rectified in the near future. This inspection was carried out to check if Mrs Wenlock, the owner and manager, had taken action to address the areas of concern found and requirements made at the Key Inspection that was carried out on 16th June 2009. To do this we spoke to Mrs Wenlock and looked at the medication, recruitment, incident and fire drill records. The records showed that a new worker had not started employment until two references and a POVA First check had been received; that staff are now signing the medication charts at the time the doses are administered; that incidents are now being reported to us under Regulation 37; and that all but a new member of staff have attended a fire drill in the last six months.
