Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
There is adequate medicine storage facilities. We observed medicine being given at lunch time in the dining area. We found that the trolley was either left with the key in the lock or unlocked at this time. In addition two residents were given their medicine at the lunch table to have in their own time. This was observed by the inspector to be taken later but the carer had signed for these before they were taken. Some of the medicine given were also signed when taken out of the blister pack, before they were actually administered. We chatted with five residents who are happy in the home. There were a few residents who managed there own medicine and although a competence assessment and a consent was available there was no clear risk assessment or care plan on the process around this self administration. In addition there was no person centered care plan on medicine to be given only when needed for staff to be consistent in the use of these medicines. All records of medicine receipt, use and disposal was kept. Any dose changes recorded were backed up with a record in the doctors visit notes although the record added to the medicine administration record [MAR] chart was not initialed. There were no photographs or sample signature of staff authorized to give medicines with the MAR charts.
