We carried out this inspection in response to some information we received. The information we received raised concerns that supplies of food at the service were not adequate to meet the needs of people living there, were of poor quality and that staff did not have access to the resources they required. Concerns were also expressed about the amount of hours the provider was working. We visited the home unannounced at a weekend and spoke with residents and staff about these issues. During the inspection the lunchtime meal was served and this was a roast chicken dinner with a selection of vegetables and all the trimmings. The meal was well presented and appeared nutritious. Menu records seen and residents spoken with confirmed that a choice of meal was always available. People living at the home made the following comments -: The owner manager is very kind, we can talk to her if we have any concerns. The food is not bad and there is usually a choice. The food could be improved but we always get enough to eat. The food is good and there is always plenty. One staff member spoken with said that the owner manager always did everything to the highest standard. We looked at the stocks of food at the home and found these to be sufficient. Staff spoken with said there was enough resources and that if they did run out of anything, the owner/manager would supply this the same day. Staff said that the system for ordering and delivery of food stocks had improved recently but that staff did not have access to the food store and if the key holder forgot to leave something out then this did pose a problem. We looked at the duty roster and spoke with residents and staff about staffing levels. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of people living at the home. the provider did work a lot of hours at the home but there was no evidence to suggest that this was in anyway detrimental to people living at the home. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
Staff should have access at all times to food stores and this would ensure that people living at the home did get the meals and snacks that meet their needs and preferences. Communication could be improved between residents and staff and amongst the staff Care Homes for Older People
