This inspection was carried out on 6th October 2006.

CSCI has not published a star rating for this report, though using similar criteria we estimate that the report is Good. The way we rate inspection reports is consistent for all houses, though please be aware that this may be different from an official CSCI judgement.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

The home provides a warm and homely atmosphere for residents. It is clean, appropriately heated and free from unpleasant smells. The home has created a real family type atmosphere. The menu in the home provides a well-balanced and varied diet for residents. The kitchen was well stocked, clean and well maintained. Beechlands has a good caring staff team, and has a low staff turnover. The staff group in the home are enthusiastic, well trained and skilled. Staff are cheerful, attentive and keen to provide a good service. The standard of care is good, and the residents spoken to were happy with the way they are cared for and felt very relaxed in their surroundings. All of the residents spoken with on the day stated that the manager and staff were `kind and caring` and the home was `very nice`. Residents reported that relatives and visitors are welcomed into the home at all times. Much of the activities provided in the home are designed to provide stimulation for residents and to promote physical exercise and interaction with the other residents and staff. The staff on duty were observed to talk continually with the residents and involve them as they went about their work through out the day.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The registered person has ensured that all staff has received appropriate training on the protection of vulnerable adults, and Health & Safety and First Aid. The home`s quality assurance processes has been developed and is in the form of an annual development plan/brochure that reflects aims and outcomes for service users and is based on a systematic cycle of planning, action and review.

What the care home could do better:

The information held in the home about individual residents (care plans) needs to clearly detail the full range of social, emotional, and physical needs.
