We looked at the safe management of medication in the home to see what progress had been made following the concerns raised at the key inspection in April 2009. We inspected the recording of receipts, administration and disposal of medication, and counted several tablets to check the accuracy of the records. All the audits carried out were accurate with the exception of folic acid for one resident when we found one too many tablets left. Nurses were counting stock on a daily basis and we did notice that sometimes the deductions were incorrect. We noticed that there were records for all receipts of medication and that disposal by the pharmacists waste company was also recorded. One resident was self -medicating including oxygen and there were risk assessments in place. This resident showed us where the medicines were kept in a locked bedside drawer and also told us what he was taking and for what reason. We looked at the lancets used for testing blood glucose and noticed that they were of the professional type to prevent the spread of infection. Storage in the office was secure and the trolley was locked and padlocked to the wall. There were warning signs on the door where oxygen was kept to prevent the risk of fire. We looked at the controlled drugs. Balances were correct but nurses were recording disposal before actually denaturing in a Doop Kit. Also the CD cupboard was used to store other items besides controlled drugs. We noticed in the register that the GP had removed two controlled drugs and we were concerned about this irregular practice. This was followed up with primary care trust after the inspection.
