What the care home does well

The service users who live in this home are looked after well. The staff have the opportunity to improve their skills through training and gaining qualifications. They are recruited through a robust procedure that reduces the chance of unsuitable people gaining access to the vulnerable people living there.

Although this home performs well it would be further enhanced the registered manager completing her formal training.

One (1) named service user under the age of 65 years Date of last inspection 27th September 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Bowbrook House is a home for older people situated on the southern edge of Shrewsbury close to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. It is owned and run on a day-to-day basis by English Care Limited. The home is currently registered for twenty-seven residents with further building being conducted to extend the number of residents it is registered for. This inspection was unannounced, started at 9.00 and lasted for two and a half hours. The inspection was carried out by talking with the registered manager/director, observing activity within the home, looking at records and talking with some of the people who live there. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. Service users’ needs are met by the numbers and skill mix of staff. Service users are in safe hands at all times. Service users are supported and protected by the home’s recruitment policy and practices. Staff are trained and competent to do their jobs. The Commission consider all the above are key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 27, 28, 29 and 30 The home’s staff have received appropriate training. The training programme, alongside a robust recruitment process ensures that the service users needs are being met by a properly trained and caring staff team. EVIDENCE: Observing the staff on duty at the time of the inspection and looking at the staff rota showed the numbers of staff available to care for the service users. Talking with the manager and looking at the staff records showed that the home has achieved the required 50 of the team being qualified to NVQ2 or above in care as well as having received all of the mandatory training. At the time of this visit a number of the staff were seen to be receiving manual handling training. Looking at the staff files also showed examples of how training needs had been identified and then incorporated into the homes training plan as part of the appraisal process. The staff files also contained all of the records of staff checks required by law. Information such as application forms and interview notes along with signed copies of a variety of policies and procedures were also seen to have been kept. Service users live in a home which is run and managed by a person who is fit to be in charge, of good character and able to discharge his or her responsibilities fully. Service users benefit from the ethos, leadership and management approach of the home. The home is run in the best interests of service users. Service users are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. Service users’ financial interests are safeguarded. Staff are appropriately supervised. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. The Commission considers Standards 31, 33, 35 and 38 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 31, 33 and 35 The home is managed in a professional manner EVIDENCE: The registered manager reported that she is continuing to work towards achieving the qualifications required for her position. The records of a satisfaction survey carried out last July were seen. These had been sent to service users, their relatives and supporters and a variety of other interested parties such as the community nurses. The manager stated that the home does not hold cash on behalf of the service users.
