Conditions of registration: 1. To allow the admission of service users aged 60 years plus. Date of last inspection 28th June 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Briarwood is a 49- bed care home providing both personal and nursing care to older peaople with dementia. It is a three-storey purpose built home providing 49 single bedrooms on the ground and first floor all with ensuite toilet facilities. There is a passenger lift giving acess to the upper floors. The home provides two lounges and dining facilities on each floor accomodating residents. There is a garden area situated at the front of the building. THe home is situated close to local amenities, shops and public transport. There are car parking facilities for use of visitors to the home. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. During the inspection the inspectors spoke to two residents, one relative, four staff and the manager. It was not possible to get feedback from the majority of the residents due to their capabilities and frailty, however the inspectors noted that all appeared settled and comfortable in their surroundings. Documentation including plans of care and staff records were examined. A tour of the building took place. The home submitted a pre inspection questionnaire. The inspectors spent a total of fours hours at the home. What the service does well: What has improved since the last inspection?
Evidence seen indicates that work has been carried out to develop risk assessments in relation to the use of bedrails. Plans of care seen reflected the resident’s needs identified in assessment as required at the previous inspection. Documentation seen in relation to staff recruitment indicated POVA first checks are carried out as required at the previous inspection. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 7&9 Residents and family were positive and satisfied with the care that they receive. Plans of care seen contain sufficient information that should ensure all care needs are met. Policies and procedures in relation to the handling of medication promote the safety and wellbeing of the residents. EVIDENCE: During the inspection six residents files were examined, these were found to contain assessments, plans of care and evaluation. Plans of care seen reflected all the needs of the residents identified within the assessment process as required at the previous inspection. Risk assessments seen contained evidence of consultation and agreement. Those residents and the family member who spoke to an inspector expressed their satisfaction with the care they received. One resident said ‘its really nice here everyone is so close’, another said ‘ I am happy here’. An audit of medication found no concerns with regard to the ordering, storage, administration and disposal of medication. The home has a policy and procedure in relation to the handling of medication. Staff who spoke to the inspector confirmed that medication is administered by either qualified nurses or senior care staff who have undertaken safe handling of medication training. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 15 The home offers a varied and nutrious diet that meets the needs and preferences of the residents. EVIDENCE: The home has a planned menu that offers choice and variety. Staff who spoke to the inspector confirmed that resident’s preferences are accommodated and alternatives to the menu are offered if required. Staff confirmed fresh fruit was available. Menus were seen to be displayed. Resident’s files seen contained evidence of nutritional assessment. Staff who spoke to the inspector all said that special diets are catered for and the involvement of a dietician is sort where necessary. Staff also stated that there were sufficient stocks of food and this was available to make snacks when catering staff were not on duty. The tables were appropriately set and staff were available to assist where necessary. Lunch was seen to be relaxed and unrushed. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19 The home continues to be well maintained, it was found to be clean and odour free, providing a pleasant environment for residents. EVIDENCE: The home was found to be clean, tidy and odour free. Decoration was seen to be well maintained. The manager confirmed that worn armchairs seen at the previous inspection have been replaced. Staff who spoke to the inspector said that there were not aware of any health and safety issues. Resident’s bedrooms which were seen were found to be personalised with pictures and ornaments.

JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 28, 29 & 30 The home has a policy and procedure in relation to recruitment of staff that should promote the protection of the residents. Staff have received appropriate training to enable them to meet the needs of the residents. EVIDENCE: During the inspection files of three staff recently recruited where examined. These were found to contain the appropriate documentation and evidence of required checks. Staff told the inspector that they were encouraged and supported to attend training. Evidence was seen to indicate staff had undertaken, manual handling, first aid, infection control, health and safety, POVA, fire safety, challenging behaviour and dementia awareness training. Senior care staff have undertaken safe handling of medication training. Staff who spoke to the inspector told her there were sufficient staff to meet the needs and provide the care required. Service users are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. Service users’ financial interests are safeguarded. Staff are appropriately supervised. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. The Commission considers Standards 31, 33, 35 and 38 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 31 & 33 Evidence indicated that the home promotes residents wellbeing and is run in their best interests. EVIDENCE: The manager of the home has the appropriate nurse and management qualifications. Family and staff who spoke to the inspectors expressed confidence in the management of the home. The inspector was told there is an open door policy and issues raised are addressed appropriately. The manager produces a regular newsletter. A relative told the inspector the home has ‘ a very good manager and super staff’. The home has recently undertaken a quality audit carried out by an external agency RDB (Research Development and Benchmarking). Regulation 26 visit reports are supplied to the Commission for Social Care Inspection on a monthly basis.
