What the care home does well Briarwood does well in all outcome areas, from provision of pre-admission information to care and management. A friendly, welcoming, professional atmosphere was evident. The home is well run and managed with good staffing levels and good mix of skills. The qualifications of care staff were impressive, with 98% of staff members having achieved National Vocational Qualifications in care at level 2, and 60% at level 3. There are good arrangements for daily life and social and recreational activities, plus very good catering arrangements. Care practice is good and staff members have completed relevant training, such as dementia awareness and safe handling of medicines, where appropriate. There are good quality assurance processes operating and people who use the service and their representatives are invited to comment about the quality of the service and make suggestions for improvement. What the care home could do better: The service does very well overall. However, there is no dedicated administrator at Briarwood. Whilst the manager carries out administrative duties very well, it is nonetheless desirable for some administrative hours to be provided, so that the manager can concentrate on management duties.
