This inspection was carried out on 28th September 2006.
CSCI has not published a star rating for this report, though using similar criteria we estimate that the report is Good. The way we rate inspection reports is consistent for all houses, though please be aware that this may be different from an official CSCI judgement.
The inspector found there to be outstanding requirements from the previous inspection report. These are things the inspector asked to be changed, but found they had not done. The inspector also made 5 statutory requirements (actions the home must comply with) as a result of this inspection.

What the care home does well
Forresters provides a holiday for vulnerable guests who have mental health problems. The home provides a country hotel environment where the guests are looked after by care and support staff. The home provides planned, relevant and interesting activities for the guests, based on choices expressed by the guests themselves. Meals are varied, plentiful and well managed to meet guests` needs and preferences. The comments were very complimentary about the quality of the food provided.
What has improved since the last inspection?
Forresters has replaced the old mini-bus with a new model and all staff have completed the necessary driving test before taking guests out. Decoration has continued in the home, but has not been completed yet. Two vending machines, for drinks and snacks, have been installed in the reception area following feedback from guests.
What the care home could do better:
The home continues to be managed by a locum manager, who has been in post since November 2005, the post has been advertised and it is hoped that a new manager will be in post buy the end of the year. Several action points have been raised during this visit and include the need for the medication administration policies, procedures and practices in the home to be reviewed and amended to suit the needs of the guests in the home and reflect good practise. Also, staff that administer medication must attend training in medication administration to update their practice. It was also noted that the home has several `homely remedies` in the medicine cabinet, but there are no policies or instructions available to cover the administration of these medications. A policy is need regarding homely remedies, as the care and support staff cannot prescribe them for the guests. The complaints form must be reviewed and amended to ensure that potential complainants are aware that they can make anonymous complaints and so that it contains information about the commission and other local external agencies that the complainant may wish to contact, such as social services or the local mental health team. During the last fire safety equipment check it was noted that some equipment needed to be replaced, action must be taken to ensure that the work has been completed.
