What the care home does well

We were told by those residents to whom we spoke that they were happy at the home, and that generally staff were kind and caring. Staff also told us that the well-being of the residents was their main concern and that is why they are working in the care sector. The organisation has listened to the complaints regarding the laundry service and has now increased the number of hours allocated to this area each week. The service recognises that the delivery of a good laundry service is essential in the provision of excellent care delivery as it enhances respect and dignity for vulnerable people. The organisation has now designated Dignity Champions in its care homes who will work for the benefit of the residents. Although this was not an area that we were specifically focusing on for this inspection, we did notice that many parts of the home have been decorated with wall murals which has been to the benefit of many of the residents who are living with dementia.

What the care home could do better:

In discussions with staff it was apparent that there are relationship problems between staff of, for example, different cultures, ethnic minorities or religions. Some staff to whom we spoke told us that they had received training in equality and diversity issues, but there were staff who have not received such training. It is essential that all staff undertake training in equality and diversity issues, and that such training is put into practice, not only in connection with the needs of residents but also in staff relationships. Controversy between staff does impact negatively on the care of residents. All staff employed in a care home must recognise that they are working in the home of vulnerable people, and that it is the needs of the residents which are of prime importance. It is also essential in the running of a care home that the management is robust in all areas. All staff involved in the management aspects should be trained in leadership, supervision and dealing with confrontation. This should ensure that training undertaken by care staff is being implemented in practice, and that the policies and procedures of the home and the organisation are being followed in all aspects.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: We carried out an unannounced random inspection following concerns received by us regarding staff relationships with each other and the possible negative impact this could have on residents and visitors. Other concerns involved the laundry services provided by the care home. We spoke to some residents, many of the staff, the registered manager, the head of housekeeping, the area manager and the local authority in whose area the home is situated. We found that there were issues around the laundry service provided by the home and that there were also relationship issues between staff. Some staff have undertaken training in equality and diversity but there were some staff who told us that they had not received training in this area. It was also evident that some shift leaders had not undertaken training in leadership and dealing with confrontation. Some residents told us that they do sometimes notice disagreements between staff members.
