It is a two-storey purpose built home providing single and double accommodation for 53 Residents; the 31 single bedrooms are a minimum of 10 sq.m. The 11 double bedrooms are a minimum of 16 sq.m. There is a passenger lift giving access to the upper floor. There are a selection of lounges and two dining rooms, one on the first floor and one on the ground floor. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. The inspection commenced at 11.15 a.m. and concluded at 3.50 p.m. Four visitors’ and three members of staff were spoken to during the inspection. Due to their confusion the Residents’ were unable to give the Inspectors’ any information about living at Graceland. However the Inspectors’ observed that the staff treated the Residents’ with kindness and respect. Whilst touring of the building the Inspectors’ noted that there were bedrooms and bathrooms’ that required decorating as well as areas that had offensive odours. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 9 and 10. Medication is dispensed appropriately and Residents’ are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medication. Residents’ families feel their relatives’ are treated with respect and their privacy is upheld. EVIDENCE: There is a policy and procedure for the receipt, recording, storage, handling, administration and disposal of medicines. The home has a contract to have unused medication disposed of appropriately. Family members’ who spoke to the Inspectors’ stated that they were happy with the care provided to their relatives and that in their opinion their relative was treated with respect and dignity. The staff were able to demonstrate during discussion that they were aware of the needs of the Residents’ and understood that although the Residents’ could not always voice their opinion or make an informed decision it was important that the Residents’ privacy and dignity was maintained at all times.

Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 13, 14 and 15 Residents’ maintain contact with family and friends; and are encouraged to make choices in their every day lives. Residents’ receive a wholesome appealing diet in pleasing surroundings. EVIDENCE: On the day of the inspection there were visitors’ in the home. The visitors’ who spoke to the Inspectors’ stated that they were always made welcome by the staff. Due to the nature of their mental health problems the Residents’ were unable to voice their opinion of the home and the care they received. Family members’ stated that they felt that their relative was offered choice depending on their needs. Staff who spoke to the Inspectors’ stated that they knew the majority of the Residents’ well and so knew their likes and dislikes. However, the staff also stated that there were Residents’ who still had the ability to makes small choices such as what to wear. Staff were available to give assistance to those Residents’ who required it. A visit to the Kitchen showed there was a good stock of food both fresh and dried. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19, 22, 23 and 26 There are areas within the home that require decorating and carpets that require a deep clean. There are lounge chairs’ that need replacing due to wear and tear. Residents’ bedrooms have been personalised by family members. There are areas within the home that have offensive odours. EVIDENCE: Whilst touring the home the Inspectors’ observed that there were bedrooms and bathrooms that required decorating, which were discussed with the Manager and Provider. There were carpets in bedrooms, dining rooms and lounges that required a deep clean. And there were areas that had an offensive odour. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 27 and 29 On the day of the inspection the Residents’ needs were met by the number and staff mix on duty. The Residents are protected by the home’s recruitment practices. EVIDENCE: An audit of four weeks of the duty rota showed that there were two qualified nurses and seven care assistants on duty for the morning shift, two qualified nurses’ and six care assistants on an evening shift and two qualified nurses’ and three care assistants on a night shift. An audit of four personnel files showed that the home complied with the requirements stipulated in Schedule 2 of the Care Home Regulations 2001. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 35 and 38 Staff at the home does not manage Residents’ financial affairs. The health, safety and welfare of Residents and staff are promoted and protected. EVIDENCE: The Inspector was informed that the Residents’ families take care of financial matters for their relative. There are policies and procedures for the health and safety of Residents’ and staff. Mandatory training for health and safety takes place.
