What the care home could do better:

The flooring needs to be completed in the kitchen/dining room on Colne Path, to provide an improved surface and ensure it remains safe. Staff need to be reminded that external and internal medicines must be kept separately. The manager should continue to review the staff facilities to provide a pleasant area for staff to take their breaks. Staffing levels must be continually reviewed to ensure they are able to meet the needs of the service

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This inspection was undertaken as part of our review of the service to examine compliance made with the requirements left at the key inspection conducted on 11th May 2009 and monitor any further progress that has been made. A new manager had been recruited and had been in post for approximately ten weeks at the time of this visit. During this inspection we had very positive comments from the staff about the new manager and were told that they felt that he was very approachable and that they felt able to go to him should they have any concerns. We noted that soap and paper towels were now accessible to staff which promoted good infection control procedures. The manager had recently conducted interviews and it is hoped that three careworkers and three domestic staff will commence employment once all checks have made and are satisfactory to ensure the safety of residents. During a tour of the building we found that three out of the four kitchen/dining rooms flooring had been replaced and we were informed that the flooring on Colne Path would be completed in the New Year to provide a more homely environment as the flooring is looking very tired and has had to be repaired temporarily. We carried out a spot check on medication and found that some signatures had been missed although the medication appeared to have been given as it was no longer in the dosette box. The Care Team Manager stated that all medication errors are addressed through supervision and a record is made. We found that external medication had been placed on a shelf with internal medication and we informed them that internal and external medication should always be stored separately, although this appeared to have been an oversight as separate storage was available on the medication trolley for external medication. During our visit we saw residents enjoying participating in the baking that was taking part on one unit and card making was in progress in another. We spoke with the activities coordinator who had only recently been employed at the home and was in the process of getting activities back up and running, they work a total of 35 hours a week. The company should look providing some additional hours to support all 77 residents as some of them require one to one support as they do not join in group activities but very much like company of someone being with them to either read, chat or play a game. We examined three care plans and found that they provided detailed information about the care needs of the residents and what they were able to do for themselves. One care plan required a risk assessment to be completed for a residents whose family take responsibility for administering their medication while on outings. This is to ensure that the resident and staff are safeguarded should it be accidentally not administered and there is an adverse effect on the resident. During our visit we saw staff talking and supporting the residents in a caring and friendly way.
