This inspection was carried out on 19th September 2005.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

The home provides an exceptional standard of accommodation for residents. All staff are either trained or working towards an National Vocational Qualification which ensures that residents are cared for by people with appropriate skills. The owner /manager consults with external professionals in a timely fashion which ensures that residents receive appropriate support that is up to date and evidence based.

What has improved since the last inspection?

All Requirements and Recommendations from the inspection of March 2005 were seen to have been complied with; Appropriate records were now held of all accidents, incidents and complaints. Staff employment procedure was compliant with the National Minimum Standards and ensured the protection of the residents.

What the care home could do better:

There were no shortfalls identified during this inspection therefore there were no statutory requirements or recommendations made.

The building is located just off the main road through to Nottingham from Loughborough. There is ample parking space to the front of the premises. The owner/manager resides in a house connected to the residential home. The building is surrounded by countryside. All areas of the premises are accessible for people with limited mobility. This unannounced inspection was conducted over 3hours. The owner /manager was present and assisted throughout the inspection. Five residents were spoken with who expressed great satisfaction with the service the home was providing. A brief tour of the premises took place. Individual records of the residents were examined and staff files checked. This inspection report was produced three months after the inspection took place due to the unexpected absence of the inspector. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 3-4-5 Prospective residents have the opportunity to visit the home and are assured following assessment, that the home is able to meet their needs prior to admission. EVIDENCE: The records examined demonstrated that a thorough assessment had been undertaken prior to the admission of the resident. The home manager had visited the person in their own home to ensure an appropriate assessment was undertaken, ensuring that the home would be able to meet the person’s needs prior to agreeing their admission, which is good practice. Residents confirmed they had been able to visit the home prior to agreeing their admission. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 7-8-9-10 Resident’s needs are identified and met. EVIDENCE: Care plans examined demonstrated that each person has their needs assessed and reviewed monthly or as their condition changes. Plans described in detail how the care staff were to support the residents in their daily lives. There was excellent recording of the medical needs of the resident including the involvement of external professionals involved, such as the District Nurse. Any risks identified were considered and strategies used to minimise the risks were in place to maintain the safety of the resident at all times. The management of medicines was comprehensive and ensured the safety of the resident. Residents spoken with confirmed they were treated respectfully and discreetly allowing them control over their daily lives and activities. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19 The home is well maintained to a high standard and suitable for the needs of the residents. EVIDENCE: A tour of the home was undertaken, looking at the individual accommodation of the residents. All areas were exceptionally clean and well maintained. Residents rooms were homely and contained personal possessions. The home was clean and warm throughout. Staff recruitment ensures the protection of the residents. EVIDENCE: Duty records demonstrated appropriate staffing levels in place. All staff are working towards or have achieved National Vocational training.
