CQC found this care home to be providing an Good service.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

The home appeared clean and tidy and people using the service appeared comfortable and cheerful. Maintenance was seen to be ongoing with external contractor working at the home. There was evidence that visiting health professionals are made welcome and provide support to people using the service to ensure their health and well being is maintained.

What the care home could do better:

We have looked at care plans and following discussion with other practitioners who have viewed further documentation conclude that care plans are suitably detailed to enable staff to have a clear information to supply the care needed. Daily records did not have a legible signature for each entry. However, we have been advised by the registered manager that an assosiated list is available which matches the staff initials with the persons full and legible signature. The registered manager is recommended to undertake a risk assessment for all free standing units including wardrobes and take the appropriate action to ensure there is no risk of tip/tilt injury. Whilst looking at care plans we identified that social care records were not fully completed and evidenced limited activity provision. One person had a fondness for a particular music, no record existed to identify how this choice is supported. The person did not have means to access this music. The registered manager is recommended to review how activities are planned and recorded. The environment of the home is mostly in good order. We discussed witht the manager by telephone that a chair identified as damaged is repaired. The manager confirmed that this would be undertaken. The registered manager is further recommended to ensurethat following an Occupational Therapy assessment, appropriate equipment is put in place, to ensure that grab rails and aids to Independence are supplied where there is an assessed need.

The home offers care and accommodation to up to 16 older people who have mental heath needs or dementia. Accommodation is in mainly single rooms, one of Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 1 8 0 2 2 0 0 9 Brief description of the care home which is en suite. Rooms are available on the first and ground floors with a stair lift linking the two floors. Two lounge rooms, dining room and a small sun room are available on the ground floor with an additional large sitting room, with a dining table, on the first floor. The home has a pleasant garden at the rear, which people can use in clement weather. The owners live in a property adjacent to the home. Weekly fees for the home range from 357 to 400 pounds per week, dependent upon peoples needs. Items not covered by the weekly fees include personal toiletries and clothing, newspapers and magazines, chiropody and hairdressing. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This random inspection was carried out by Regulatory Inspector Gail Richardson over a 2 hour period. The purpose of the inspection was to look into a concerns raised about the standard of care of one person. The inspection took place with a member of the Safeguarding Team from Cornwall Social services. The outcome of the inspection confirmed that the concern raised was unfounded. At the time of this visit there were 16 people living at the home. One person is in hospital. During the morning there were 2 care assistants and one cook on duty. The registered manager/provider was not available, but under normal circumstances she would be present as either supernumerary or as part of staff team. As part of the inspection we, the Commission, were able to tour the building, talk with a staff member and review care records relating to the person concerned. We later had telephone conversations with the registered manager/ provider and further documentation was supplied. We found everybody at the home to be very helpful and cooperative.
