What the care home does well
We received no concerns about the delivery of care from residents or their relatives. Staff were friendly, helpful and had a good understanding of individual resident`s care needs. Records demonstrated that staff had been provided with good training opportunities. Visitors told us that they were made to feel welcome. Records relating to residents` care needs were easily accessible to members of staff.
What has improved since the last inspection?
Since the last inspection a clear and detailed schedule of cleaning had been implemented within the kitchen and laundry areas. This meant that named staff had a responsibility for ensuring that these areas are kept clean and in good order. The home`s environmental and safe working risk assessments had been updated. The activities programme had been developed but should be expanded further to ensure that it meets the needs of all residents. The manager had completed the Registered Manager`s Award.
What the care home could do better:
The documentation and good practices systems within the home had good potential. However, the management monitoring tools in place were not effective enough to review these systems on a regular basis and therefore anomalies were noted. For example the nutritional records were not current, there were anomalies within the medication system, records asking that the temperature of the hot water be tested in each bathroom had not been completed, call bells were not always accessible to residents, the position of the fax machine is inappropriate and some aspects of the care plans were missing. The home is registered to provide care for residents who have care needs associated with dementia. As recorded within the `environment` section of this report, development work should be undertaken to ensure that the physical aspects of the home are suitable.
