What did we do for this annual service review? This service is rated as Two star, good. This rating was made at the last key inspection on 14 September 2007. We reviewed all the information provided to the Care Quality Commission since the last ASR inspection. This included Annual Quality Assurance Assessment Statutory Notifications received Telephone conversation with the Registered Manager What has this told us about the service? Nightingale House is a family run business providing care and support older people who may also have dementia, enduring mental health problems or a physical disability. The Registered Manager described how the home also continues to provide care for people who have mental health impairment from the effects of long term alcohol use. The home had one vacancy at the time of this assessment. Assessments are completed by the Registered Manager and another family member who is also a Registered Mental Health Nurse. Placements in the home are from the London Boroughs of Haringey, Islington and Camden. The Registered Manager told us that all the annual reviews had been completed by the placing authorities, as welll as reviews done by the community mental health teams. Most residents in the home are relatively mobile and able to go out into the local community with support. The homes Activities Coordinator recently left and a new person is being employed. Activities described to us included arts and crafts, T Shirt printing, poetry sessions, gardening, architecture discussions and gardening. There are also a range of more traditional activities provided including reminiscence, quizzes and games. Some residents attend day centre and some have gone on outings to Southend and to pub and restaurant lunches. Several physical improvements have been made, for example, refurbishment of the ground floor and kitchen, improvements to the ceilings and the lift and new carpets. The Registered Manager told us that most staff are part time and studying for NVQ or other qualifications. One new staff member has started work in the past year and statutory pre employment checks have been completed. Eleven out of thirteen staff have NVQ 2 or above and staff received ongoing refresher training and other specialist training. The home has kept us informed about the any issues for concern in the home. In the past year, these were a short series of incidents relating to one person having a Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 relapse that triggered challenging behaviour. The Registered Manager told us that there have been no complaints received in the past year. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Our inspection plan remains unchanged remains unchanged. We will do the next key inspection by 1 September 2010.
