Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: A random inspection visit was made to the home by Mr Dave OConnor, Regulation Manager on 5th January 2009 in response to information received that the heating in part of the home is not working properly. During the visit the manger of the home, a registered nurse and the homes handyman were spoken with. Parts of the home including some bedrooms were inspected to determine whether or not people living at the home are sufficiently warm. We were told during the visit that a new boiler had been installed at the home three weeks ago and that this boiler heats part of the home including some bedrooms. The home has full running hot water. The manager said that the new boiler is not delivering the heat it should and contractors have been on site to try and rectify the issue. We saw during the visit that a heating contractor was on site and evidence that there is ongoing work to fix the problems with the new boiler. We also saw that the bedrooms affected have been fitted with additional wall heating. We found that thermometers are put in corridors and bedrooms to help staff monitor the temperature of the home. These showed that the heating in the home was between 20-21 degrees Celsius indicating an acceptable level of heating. The manager confirmed that he has full discretion to order repairs and provide additional heating if he felt that there are any problems with the heating. The handyman confirmed that the boilers can be adjusted to provide more heat as and when necessary. The manager confirmed that he will keep us informed of the ongoing work to the new boiler What the care home does well: What they could do better: If you want to know what action the person responsible for this care home is taking following this report, you can contact them using the details set out on page 2.
