What the care home does well

The recruitment files are well organised.

What the care home could do better:

Have a copy of all staff photos and a copy of the staff induction undertaken at the home in their files. This is for inspection purpose and if a staff member loses their induction document, the home would not have any written evidence to show that this had taken place. Information about how the staff on POVA first is supervised on a daily basis needs to be recorded.

Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 7 What we found: This random inspection was initiated by a telephone call to the Care Quality Commission regarding concerns about employment of an individual person whos CRB check had not been fully concluded prior to working at the home. We visited this home on the 15th of April 09. The registered manager was not on duty but the Responsible Individual and the operations manager for the home were present and were very helpful in providing information that we needed to look at. We inspected all the staff recruitment files for this year and last year. Evidence showed that the relevant information was being obtained for all staff. For example there was information on the date the staff started employment, with a completed application form, interview assessments, contracts, and a 48 hour opting out form. All staff had two references, a copy of bank statement, driving license, passport, and birth certificate. Some files had health care assessments and confirmation letter from the Home office to state that the person was able to work. All the staff had POVA first check prior to starting work at the home. We were told by management that all the staff on POVA first were supervised by experienced staff until they received their CRB check. The newest member of staff was employed in April 09 and they had still not received their CRB check. We were told that the member of staff did not work on their own and they were supervised by another member of staff on duty on each shift. This was confirmed by inspecting the staff working rota. The persons induction was not available in their file. We were told by management that all staff keep their induction booklet with them. The member of staff was not on duty so there fore we were not able to see this document.
