What the care home does well

The home is welcoming, pleasantly decorated and furnished and has a relaxed and happy atmosphere. The residents had decorated the communal areas of the home ready for Christmas. The feedback received from residents and their relatives is extremely complimentary of the service provided. The residents stated that they are happy and enjoy living in the home. Observations made also indicate that the residents feel relaxed and comfortable in the home. Five relatives completed comment cards. Comments made include: `We cannot praise too highly the management and staff`, `the residents receive five star treatment`, ` the standard of care is exceptionally high`, ` my relative has excellent care all of the time, I have nothing but praise for the staff`. The residents continue to take part in a broad range of activities that they enjoy. The staff and manager value the contribution made by the residents to the day-to-day running of the home. The opinions and wishes expressed by the residents held equal importance to those expressed by the staff and manager. The residents indicated that they enjoy taking responsibility for chores around the home. The home regularly consults with the residents, their relatives, staff and other professionals involved in the resident`s care regarding the quality of the service that is provided. The feedback received is acted upon.The staff support the residents in a caring and sensitive way that promotes their dignity. The staff have the necessary knowledge and skill to support the residents and meet their complex needs.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The manger has introduced an information sheet, which details the medications prescribed for each resident. The information provided in this sheet includes the reason foe the prescription of the medication and any side effects that the resident may experience. The requirements made at the last inspection, to ensure that the laundry door is not propped open and to store cleaning materials securely have been met.

The home is registered for eight (8) service users in the category of Learning Disability, of which one (1) may also have a Physical Disability. 18th July 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Polesworth Group Homes was established as a limited company in June 1991, with the aim of providing accommodation and support for adults with learning disabilities. 32 Station Road is a care home for eight residents and it is situated in Polesworth near Tamworth. The property is a converted nurses’ home on two floors and is unidentifiable as a care home, blending into surrounding residential properties. The home offers six single and one shared bedrooms. On the ground floor there are three bedrooms, a dining room, a large lounge and a conservatory, the kitchen, a utility room, a staff office and sleeping room, a shower room and toilet. Upstairs there are four bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. The premises are well maintained and decorated, the furniture and fittings are of good quality. Externally to the rear there is a garden with a lawn, flowers and shrubs and the patio area. The craft room, which is a resource centre for all service users in Polesworth Group Homes, and the registered managers office, is also situated at the side of the property. The front of the home provides car parking spaces. The home is staffed 24 hours a day and cares for residents with medium to high levels of need. Some residents have high healthcare needs as well as learning disabilities. There is a plan to reduce the number of residents admitted to the home when vacancies occur. This is the second inspection of this home in the 2005/06 inspection year. The inspection took place on 22nd December 2005 at 10am; this was arranged with the manager on 21st December 2005. Records relating to the residents and the management of the home were examined; the inspection also included a tour of the home and discussions with staff and residents. Observations of the interactions between the residents and staff were also made. The home has provided a pre-inspection questionnaire. Feedback cards have been received from five of the resident’s relatives and all of the residents. The feedback received has been included in the body of this report. This inspection focuses on the core standards that were not assessed at the last inspection. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 13, 15 and 16 The residents continue to be supported to participate in valued and fulfilling activities that promote their independence and that they enjoy. EVIDENCE: Standards 12, 14 and 17 were met at the last inspection of this home and were not assessed on this occasion. The inspector was invited to have lunch with the residents. The lunch provided was a choice of vegetable soup, carrot and coriander soup or a selection of sandwiches. Dessert was a choice of fruit served with ice cream. The meal provided was attractively presented, taking into account the residents individual support needs and enjoyed by all of the residents. The residents and staff ate their meal together in either the dining room or conservatory. The meal time was relaxed with a jovial atmosphere. Support was provided to individual residents in a sensitive way that promoted their dignity. Polesworth Group - Station Road, 32 DS0000004283.V274750.R01.S.doc Version 5.1 Page 11 Discussions with the residents, staff and examination of records confirmed that the residents continue to be supported to take part in a broad range of activities that they enjoy. This includes activities planned activities in the home and in the community. The residents were looking forward to Christmas time, and on the afternoon of the inspection some of the residents were planning to bake mince pies to take when they visit their families. The residents had also recently been to the pantomime and out for Christmas meals. The residents are actively involved in the day to day running of the home, providing opportunity to promote and maintain their independence. The residents have responsibility for completing some household chores, such as setting the table and washing up after meals. The residents indicated that they enjoy this responsibility. Interactions observed reflected family life, with the residents and staff discussing their day, expressing their wishes and negotiating arrangements for the next few days. The resident’s contribution to these discussions held equal importance to those made by the manager and staff. The home continues to support the residents to maintain contact with family and friends. The residents confirmed that they are able to have visitors to the home. Feedback received from the relatives confirmed that they feel able to visit their relative at any time and are welcomed into the home. A number of residents are looking forward to spending time with their relatives over the Christmas period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24 and 30 The standard of the environment is good, providing the residents with an attractive, comfortable, clean and homely place to live. EVIDENCE: The inspection included a tour of the communal areas of the home and some of the resident’s bedrooms. The home continues to be well maintained, is comfortable, clean and homely. The resident’s bedrooms are decorated and furnished to reflect the individual residents personalities. The home was attractively decorated for Christmas. The manager stated that the residents had assisted with this. Requirements made at the last inspection to ensure that cleaning materials are securely stored when not in use and to ensure that the laundry door, being a fire door, remains closed have been addressed. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 32 and 35 The residents are supported in a sensitive way by a team of staff who have the necessary training, skill and experience to meet the complex needs of the residents. EVIDENCE: Examination of a sample of staff training records, discussions with staff, at this and the previous inspection of this home and observations during the inspection confirmed that the staff have the necessary knowledge and skill to support the residents and meet their complex needs. Throughout the inspection support was offered to the residents in a caring and sensitive way. Training records confirmed that the staff have received training relating to fire, manual handling, food hygiene, adult protection, infection control, first aid and medication administration. In addition training relating to palliative care, Nasogastric feeding, diabetes, autism, challenging behaviour, epilepsy and sensory impairment. The manager has also attended training relating to dementia care. Since the last inspection three staff members have been employed to work in the home. This includes a cook who works five days a week. Prior to this meal preparation had been the responsibility of the care staff. This change enables the care staff to spend more time with the residents. The manager stated that no staff members have left the home. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 37 and 39 The home regularly reviews its performance through a good programme of self-review and consultation, seeking the views of the residents, their relatives, staff and other professionals. There is evidence that the views expressed are acted upon. EVIDENCE: The Registered Manager demonstrated her competence to manage the home throughout this inspection. Systems are in place to monitor the quality of the service that is provided. This includes seeking the views of the residents, their relatives, staff and visiting professionals. Copies of questionnaires and analysis of the responses give is available in the home, this is with the exception of feedback received from visiting professionals. The manager stated that this feedback is collated and held at the organisations head office. These meetings are individually tailored to enable the residents to discuss the issues that are important to them. A plan to address issues raised or make changes to the care provided is agreed during the meeting. Notes from these meetings are provided in a pictorial format using appropriate language. A representative of the organisation visits the home, under Regulation 26 of the Care Homes Regulations 2001. A copy of the report made following these visits is provided to the Commission.
