Inspection on 04/10/06 for Rawalpindi House

Also see our care home review for Rawalpindi House for more information

This inspection was carried out on 4th October 2006.

CSCI has not published a star rating for this report, though using similar criteria we estimate that the report is Good. The way we rate inspection reports is consistent for all houses, though please be aware that this may be different from an official CSCI judgement.

The inspector found there to be outstanding requirements from the previous inspection report but made no statutory requirements on the home.

What follows are excerpts from this inspection report. For more information read the full report on the next tab.

What the care home does well

The home provides a relaxed and friendly environment for service users. The inspector observed that service users were enabled to make choices about their daily routines and social activities. The home demonstrated a commitment towards developing its services for people with dementia through staff training, life history work and specialist reminiscence sessions. Visitors stated that they liked the welcoming approach of staff and the home`s culture of inviting relatives to social occasions.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Four requirements were issued in the previous inspection report; two of these requirements were noted to have been satisfactorily met. All staff with a responsibility for administering medication had undertaken `refresher` training and the care home demonstrated that regular monitoring of the contents of the first aid boxes was being adhered to. The home has now introduced meetings for service users, which are facilitated by an independent advocate. The meetings for staff were noted to be better attended.

What the care home could do better:

A requirement was issued in the previous report for the care home to ensure the safe storage, recording and disposal of medication; this aspect of the service needs to be improved. The communal toilets need to be re-decorated and the home must ensure that any hazardous items are safely stored. Staff need to employ a more rigorous approach to labelling opened food items, taking into account the manufacturers guidance for disposal.
