This inspection was carried out on 28th September 2006.

CSCI has not published a star rating for this report, though using similar criteria we estimate that the report is (sorry - unknown). The way we rate inspection reports is consistent for all houses, though please be aware that this may be different from an official CSCI judgement.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

The home provided good information about services and provisions offered to service users. The environment and facilities enabled service users to maintain their level of independence and to be supported in a way they agreed to in their care plans. A good entertainment programme stimulated service users to stay active. A service user case tracked was going regularly to Huntington independently, using public transport. Another user was observed doing chair exercises. As the care staff could get busy at certain times, the home employed a councillor who spent time with service users and offered a perfect opportunity for each individual to talk. A bed ridden service user in particular, benefited from this provision. The menu chosen by service users contained nice food, including fresh salmon and roast lamb and plenty of fruit and vegetables. The home was exceptionally good in reacting to changes in service users` conditions. When gaining excess weight was identified, the home immediately reviewed care plans and arranged for weight monitoring and paying attention to diet. In two months, the user`s weight was stable again. The rota was flexible and users` needs were considered, so on certain days the staff worked different times, according to the needs. The owner and the manager successfully led the staff team in meeting users` needs.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The home responded to the requirements set previously. Care plans were improved and contained agreed actions to support service users. The owner and new administrator were working on production of a large print of the statement of purpose and service user`s guide. They planned to extend access for service users to some other documents, which would also be available in large print. A supervision plan was made and the regularity of supervisions, one-to-one support to staff, was improved. Hot water and fridge/freezer temperatures were now regularly monitored and recorded. Service users spoken to were aware of the complaints procedure.

What the care home could do better:

The home identified areas for improvement themselves and presented these to the inspector during the site visit. They were looking for the best solution for the bedroom and en-suite toilet doors that clashed when opened simultaneously. The solution identified and ordered was a door that could open to both sides. Having met most minimum standards the home should strive to move on, to exceeds standards and achieving the excellent rating.
