What the care home does well
Staff help residents to do their daily jobs around the house. This helps the people here to learn how to do things for themselves. Residents said they "like" the meals. They go shopping and help to choose menus. The people who live here are helped to make their own choices about activities, clothes, and holidays. They have good contact with their families. They have good use of local facilities such as shops, pubs, and sports centres. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are lockable so residents can use these rooms in private. The house is very comfortable, and well looked after and this makes it a nice place for people to live in. The different bedrooms have been painted in the colours chosen by the residents, and they can spend time in their bedrooms when they want. Residents said that they "like" their bedrooms. Staff understand the different needs of the people who live here. Staff talk to residents to find out what they like and what they don`t like. Staff know when a resident is not happy about something and will try to change it to make it better for them. There are lots of different activities throughout the day, and some evenings. The people who live here choose activities, and the home makes sure that there is enough money to pay for activities. The home checks all new staff to make sure they are the right staff to work with the people who live here. All staff get good training so they know how to support people in the right way. The home is run in the right way by the Manager and the Trust. The home listens to residents, and changes things if it makes it better for the people who live here.
What has improved since the last inspection?
Care files now show how each person has been involved in their own support plans at their monthly meeting. This shows how each person has made their own choices, for example where to go on holiday. The new support plans also include goals for people about learning to do things by themselves, such as making meals and cleaning. One person has moved bedrooms so that they are nearer to staff if they need help. The home has started to use photographs to help one resident show his choices. The home is going to more support staff to help one resident.
What the care home could do better:
Information packs have got old information in, like who to tell if you are unhappy. The packs need to have the new information put in. Also the packs are hard to read. It would be better if they had standard pictures or photographs to show what they mean. Relatives said they would like to know about doctor`s appointments before the residents go to them. One relative said, "I would like to know things when they happen." The shower rooms in both units need redecorating now, and one shower room had a bad small. The support plans should show how well people are doing with their long-term goals, such as communication, especially when there has been some new help with this. The records about medication should always be filled in the right way.
