This inspection was a random inspection to ensure that the requirements made at the last Key Inspection in June 2009 had been met. In June 2009 the manager was new in post and was identifying, through audit, areas that needed to be improved. At this time we left four requirements. The short inspection was undertaken on 17th May 2010 using the revised methodology in place during the registration transition period. As a result we focused on the management of the service. We found that all the requirements we had left at the previous inspection had been met. The manager had done this by producing a clear action plan and working through all the areas on it. She told us that she now felt in control and that the staff team were starting to support the necessary changes she had implemented. She had almost addressed everything on her action plan, which she had prioritised according to need. We looked at two care plans and these had instructions for staff to follow to provide the necessary care. The plans were linked to risk assessments and had been reviewed every month. More detail as to exactly how the care should be provided would ensure that staff approached care giving in a consistent way. We looked at two staff files and these were well kept and had all the necessary information and checks in them. The manager had a good understanding of recruitment practises to ensure people were kept safe. The manager had a training matrix on the wall in her office and consequently she was easily able to identify any additional training that staff needed, and when training should be updated. What the care home does well:
People living at the home had the opportunity to go out and take part in a range of activities. On the day of the inspection one service user, accompanied by a member of staff, was having lunch with her family in a nearby hotel to celebrate her birthday. Our visits spanned lunchtime and people had a choice of homemade chicken and mushroom pie and vegetables, or egg and chips. People told us that they enjoyed the food. One person said, everyone is so kind, nothing is too much. We received two completed questionnaires from people using the service and both were very positive about the care provided telling us that everything was done well at the home and nothing that could be done better. Staff told us during inspection and as part of the questionnaires they completed prior to our visit, that they had seen a change in practises under the new manager. One staff member wrote. our new manager is fair and treats all staff the same. She is a jolly person which brings alot of bounce into the home which makes it a happy place to work. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 Staff had told us that at times they felt under pressure because of the housekeeping duties that they were responsible for along with their care duties. However during inspection we met a new member of staff who was employed as a housekeeper. Previous requirements have been met and we have made no further requirements as a result of this visit.
