What the care home does well

Throughout the inspection service users and a visitor complemented the care staff regarding the service provided. Those residents spoken with expressed satisfaction with the home, and more especially the staff who they said were kind, caring and helpful. Some of the service users had heard that activities were to be improved when a new employee starts and they said this was welcome news. Good practice by care staff was observed throughout the inspection. The home has a registered manager who is very experienced and who has worked hard to improve the service and to support the staff team. The dementia unit has an enclosed levelled courtyard providing safe access to outdoors with seating/patio furnishing. The food served was of good quality and received excellent comments from a recent scientific team from a food authority. Action had been taken to meet previous requirements. The environment was fresh and clean with no odours detected. Residents can enjoy access to the gardens (weather permitting) and these provide a good outlook. Residents who are not able to access the gardens beyond the fenced and gated areas alone are supported to access them by staff or their visitors.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Since the last inspection windows in the hallway have been made operable as these had previously been screwed shut; windows where there is greater risk have been more aesthetically sealed with some final tidying up still to do. Care plans and falls risk assessments had been reviewed and were being kept under review. An activities co-ordinator has been recruited and will commence work as soon as clearance checks have been issued. The medication system is being regularly audited and medication no longer required is immediately removed the trolley for disposal. Staff stated that they felt that their manager had contributed well to creating a cohesive team and staffing is now stable formal supervision was now becoming regular.

What the care home could do better:

The registered manager stated that local college has agreed to provide more in-depth Dementia Care Training for staff following the completion of current studies (final papers for the current studies have been submitted to the college and results are awaited). The inspector discussed with the manager the available resources for dementia care and that she might find a visit to the http://www.doh.gov.uk site useful.
