This was an unannounced random inspection visit by B.Ludlow and J.Poole for CSCI. The visit was made in order to monitor the progress of the service which was quality rated as poor at the last key inspection. A tour of the premises was made in order to see the defective windows that had been reported to CSCI and are subject to an improvement notice by the Health and Safety Executive who have visited recently. The home has been given supplementary management by Somserset County Council. Three experienced care home managers have been actively assisting the registered provider to improve the service outcomes for people living at Suddon House. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
Staff were spoken with who appeared on the duty rotas to be working as many as ten days without a break. Some of the shifts worked had only a nine hour gap between one and the next, this is not sufficient for safe working. The registered provider was advised that staff must not work excessively long hours. This could place people being cared for at risk, should the person become too tired to work safely. The registered provider is asked to address this to ensure safe working practice. Staff working with work permits and visas should have information in their files confirming the status of their employment. Care Homes for Older People
Page 4 of 12 One wardrobe was seen that was insecure, this must be re-secured safely to the wall. Some bedrooms are not ideal in shape and the furniture in one did not fit in very well. The accommodation should be reviewed for each person to ensure the best use of the space. Shabby and / or damaged furniture that is in use should be reviewed. Equipment and furniture that is available at the home but which is not currently in use should be utilised for the comfort of people in residence.
