A random inspection was performed on 9th August 2010. This was in response to a complaint received about care of a person at the home. The complaint alleged faulty equipment lead to neglect and also included information relating to inappropriate oral hygiene. There was insufficient detail to accurately indicate whether the complaint was substantiated. The manager informed that a faulty battery on one of the hoists had been identified last week, but had been rectified. At the inspection two people were seen to be moved in a safe way using a hoist. Other people also appeared to have received a good standard of personal care. People seen appeared to have received oral hygiene. The manager gave assurances that he would speak with all staff to gain further information if necessary, and inform them that issues raised in the complaint, if substantiated, were a form of abuse, and would result in disciplinary action being taken. During the inspection we noted that many people did not have appropriate foot wear present. Staff could not clearly indicate specific reasons why this was the case. One person who liked to walk around the home did not have shoes or slippers on, and wanted to step outside of the home, but was prevented from doing so because of poor weather and lack of footwear. A discussion was held with the manager who confirmed that he would address this issue.
