What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment document, required by law, detailing what the home does well, what could be done better, what needs improving and focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. At the previous key inspection to the service (October 2008), there were 2 requirements and 4 recommendations made. The response from the manager to the key inspection report, confirmed that actions undertaken to address the requirements has been completed. Information provided in the AQAA details that prospective people are assessed as to their specific care needs prior to admission, and have the opportunity to visit the care home to see if they like it, to meet staff and other residents. A plan of care is devised for each person living at the care home and the healthcare needs of individual people are monitored. Surveys returned to us from people who live at the care home were generally positive about the care and support provided. Two surveys recorded, all staff are lovely and there is a homely feel, staff are helpful and friendly. The AQAA details that within the past 12 months the home has received 2 complaints. We were advised that these related to alleged poor care practices. We spoke to the person in charge of the home and they were able to confirm the outcome of one complaint (not upheld), however they were unable to advise as to the outcome of the second complaint. The AQAA details that within the past 12 months there have been 3 safeguarding referrals and investigations relating to alleged accusations against staff, significant weight loss for one person and concerns that one person was being abused Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 whilst living at their own home prior to admission to the care home. The person in charge was unable to provide us with details as to the outcome of each safeguarding issue. Records received by us show that we were made aware of the issues and that appropriate action has been taken. The dataset which provides us with numererical information about the service confirmed that in the past 3 months the service has not used temporary and/or agency staff to cover shifts. The AQAA details that there is a committment by the organisation to provide training for staff and 23 people have attained NVQ Level 2 or above. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. Records show that we have received a high number of notifications and although this is seen as positive, further improvements are required to ensure that documentation identifies how issues are proactively managed. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 26th July 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the peopleusing the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
