What the care home does well

All residents receive detailed assessments before their admission and the health care being provided is of a good standard. A GP for the home commented that care staff understood the needs of the residents and ensured the specialist advice given was acted upon and incorporated into the residents care plan. All comment cards received from relatives stated that they felt satisfied with the overall care provided and are kept informed of important matters relating to their relatives care. One commented that their relative "seems happy and well cared for". All comment cards from residents stated that staff listen to them and act on what they say. During the inspection residents were positive in their comments regarding the care they receive. It was evident throughout the inspection that staff were caring and supportive towards residents. At mealtimes staff allowed those residents who needed to be fed as much time as they needed to so that they did not feel rushed. Choices in regard to resident care are being respected and it was particularly noted that during the morning residents got up for breakfast when they wanted and there was no obvious set time for breakfast. The home is well maintained and rooms are attractively decorated. Residents are able to personalise their rooms to make them more homely. It was observed that the manager has a good relationship with visitors to the home and visitors confirmed that any concerns or issues raised are dealt with promptly. The home have exceeded the standard for 50% of all care staff to achieve a National Vocational Qualification II in Care, this assists care staff in providing more effective care to the residents.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The manager has reviewed care plans to ensure these are being evaluated monthly which enables staff to identify any changes in care required to meet care needs. Some work has been done in developing risk assessments to ensure any risks associated with resident care are considered and managed to protect residents. The fridge in the kitchen with the broken seal has been replaced so that the fridge can be maintained in a clean condition. Bedrooms were free from unpleasant odours with the exception of two areas and the manager gave an explanation for these which suggested these were temporary. Systems have been developed to allow for all members of care/nursing staff to receive formal supervision six times a year. This enables staff competence to be evaluated as well as any staff development needs to ensure residents receive effective care and services on an ongoing basis. Personal information relating to residents is being kept in a secure location within the manager`s office to maintain confidentiality. The manager advised that all bathrooms in the home have now been refurbished and some of the bedrooms and one of the lounges have been decorated to improve the environment for the residents.
