What the care home does well The premises were homely and domestic in character. Bedrooms were personalised and unique to their occupants. Communal areas were spacious and comfortable. The home is free of clutter to make it easier for the people who live there to negotiate their way around. All areas inspected were immaculately clean, and decorated and maintained to a high standard. We saw that service users were encouraged to make choices about all areas of their lives, and to determine their own lifestyles. They were also involved in decisions about their care, attending reviews and being involved in care planning. We looked at two care plans and saw they were person-centred and focused on encouraging the service users to become more independent. Everyone who lived in the home had an individual programme of group and/or one-toone activities depending on their needs. All attended a local day centre run by the Owning Body. Two service users had work placements which they went on supported by a `life coach`. Leisure activities included swimming, going to the gym, horse riding, and visiting the local pub. Regular group or individual holidays were provided both in the UK and abroad. The staff team was small and established. The home does not use agency staff so the people who live there benefit from continuity of care. The Owning Body has provided extensive training for staff, including `Sign Supported English` (a simplified version of British Sign Language). We saw that the staff on duty had a good understanding of the needs and personalities of the people they cared for. They demonstrated both skill and empathy in their interactions with them. The home`s Registered Manager is based at another service run by the Owning Body. She works at Johnson Avenue two days per week, being contactable by phone at all other times. The staff we talked to all said they felt supported by the Manager and Owning Body and received regular supervision and training. What the care home could do better: One service user`s bedroom is relatively small (7` by 8`). This means the occupant has limited space for their belongings. However the staff sleeping-in room, which is on the same floor, is much larger (15` by 8`). It is recommended that consideration is given to swapping these rooms around so the service user can have more spacious accommodation. Random inspection report

This was a routine random inspection which we carried out to ensure the home continues to meet its responsibilities as a registered care home. When we arrived at the home we were met by one of the Deputy Managers. She took us on a tour of the premises, introduced us to several service users and staff, and made care plans, risk assessments, and other documentation available for us to view. However the staff sleeping-in room, which is on the same floor, is much larger (15 by 8).
