We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was comprehensive and clear and gave us good information about the services being provided. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. At the last inspection visit we found that the people living in the home were assessed to ensure that their needs could be met and care plans were in place. The AQAA told us that there have been no new admissions since the last inspection. At the last inspection we saw that care plans are drawn up from the information gathered in the pre-admission assessment and include areas such as personal care, healthcare, social needs and behaviour management. Care plans are reviewed monthly. In the AQAA we were told that, Risk Assessments are personalised for each individual. They are continuously reviewed; key workers record this on their monthly key worker reports. When a review of assessments has taken place, this is documented and staff sign to state they have read, reviewed and will adhere to the document. This demonstrates that risks for service users have been considered and minimised as far as possible and staff are aware of systems of work to minimise those risks. 5 Shetland Court is now offering more planned and unplanned activities for all service users. People are also supported to access community activities and day centres. The home works closely with the local Community Learning Disability Team and other healthcare professionals to ensure that peoples needs are met. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The AQAA told us that We encourage staff to support individuals with a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. All individuals need to have their health monitored and where appropriate alternative diets and or healthier snacks are promoted to maintain a healthy lifestyle, yet respect choice. Each individual has a Health Action Plan. The home continues to make improvements to the environment. We have been told that in the last twelve months they have purchased new curtains and accessories for the lounge; decorated the kitchen and purchased new furniture to make it much more user friendly; given the garden a makeover and grown some vegetables; encouraged service users to make more use of the garden, decorated the hall, stairs, landing, laundry room and cloakroom. We were told in the AQAA that the home has thorough recruitment procedures and that staff receive the training they need to meet the needs of the people who live there. We were told that nine of the thirteen permanent care staff have a national Vocational Qualification in Care at level Two or above. We were also told in the AQAA that the new manager is applying to register with The Commission. We have not received the application at the time of this Annual Service Review. The home says that they have not received any complaints in the last twelve months. There have been four Safeguarding Adults investigations in the last twelve months. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. The home works well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will not be changing our inspection plan and will carry out a key inspection before 21/01/2011. However we can visit the home at any time if we receive information that gives us cause for concern.
