What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review: This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for the people using the service. Information about how the home has managed any complaints What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications Surveys returned by services users and other people involved with the home. The previous key inspection report. What has this told us about the service? At the last key inspection which was carried out on 16/02/2009, we found that the home was being well run, people had good healthcare support, they had access to their local community and were being supported by a competent and well trained staff team. The manager of the home returned the AQAA when we asked for it and this contained comprehensive and clear information about the service currently being provided in the home. The AQAA tells us that people have their individual needs and wishes assessed and recorded in a plan of care that is kept under regular review. There is an in-house consultant occupational therapist working with service users to ensure that their care plans identify goals for their care and rehabilitation and service users are involved in the care planning process. The home is working with a variety of healthcare professionals to ensure that peoples physical, mental and emotional healthcare needs are met and we are told that this includes speech and language therapists, sight consultants and neurological specialists. People have access to their local community and there are a range of activities and outings on offer both during the week and at week ends. Examples we were given of people being supported to be as independent as possible were, some people engage in voluntary work and meaningful employment, they attend literacy and numeracy sessions and the home supports service users to work with job centres and advisory services. The manager tells us that some improvements have been made to the environment by Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 the driveway being resurfaced, a new flat screen television purchased and new furniture for the lounge is in place. We are told that there are sufficient staff with the skills and training to support people with acquired brain injury and of fourteen staff members, all have undergone a formal induction and nine have the NVQ award at level two or above. The manager tells us that there is a clear complaints procedure in place, including an accessible version for service users. Five complaints have been recorded and responded to in the homes given timescales and we are told that none were upheld. No complaints have been received by the Commission about the home. Comments from service users in four returned surveys included, they (the home) treat you like a human being, and its good here and does exactly as it says on the box. One person said they did not like living in the home but said that they did not know why this was. In a survey from the parent of a service user we are told, If Abi House has staff that are well trained and supervised, that makes the job easier because residents (like my son) become confused when dealing with agency or newly recruited staff. The AQAA tells us that all of the homes policies and procedures were updated in 2009 and that recording and management arrangements in the home have been improved. The manager continues to let us know the things that have happened since the last key inspection and have shown us that they manage issues well. They work well with us and have shown that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will carry out a key inspection by 16/02/2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
