Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. What has this told us about the service? At the last key inspection on 21/10/2008, the home was assessed as being an excellent service. One complaint and one safeguarding issue issue about the home have been reported to the Commission since the last inspection, both of these were dealt with properly and effectively. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The AQAA contained a range of detailed information and indicated that the home continues to provide an excellent service. The AQAA told us of the improvements the home had made in the previous twelve months. These had included: kitchen and domestic staff have began their NVQ 2 training; incorporating a dignity code into the homes philosophy of care for all staff; in vested in hand and foot spas for residents, which enhance relaxation; ongoing training for staff in safeguarding adults; garden areas improved with planting; ongoing training for mentorship with City University and upgrading the homes computerised systems. The AQAA told us that planned improvements to the home over the next twelve months would include: regular and ongoing maintenance of the home; ongoing training in care planning and assessing risk; review and improve daily activity programmes; improving information in residents life histories to ensure a greater understanding and insight into residents as individuals; ongoing implementation of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards for residents; continued maintenance of the home; ongoing NVQ level 2 and 3 training for staff and improved palliative care. The AQAA also told us that the home listens to residents and relatives views including by holding residents meetings, relatives meetings and questionnaires and act on this information. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 We received surveys from 20 residents that indicated that they were generally satisfied with the care they received. We received comments from 3 social and health care professionals. A GP told us; Comprehensive assessment and planning, good communication with patients and relativeand a social work team manager told us; (the home) encourages residents to socialise. We received survey forms from 14 staff that indicated they were felt properly supported in their work. comments included; Acorn Lodge is a very secure and comfortable place to work, our manager is approachable, understandable and is a pleasant person, and; We are provided with good training and development opportunities. The home notifies the Commission of events affecting residents as required under Regulation 37 of the Care Homes Regulations 2001 and they have shown that they deal with these satisfactorily. From the various information received, including the AQAA, our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 7th October 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
