What the care home does well This home is fairly new, having opened in December 2008. It is purpose built, providing accommodation over four floors. We found it to be attractively presented with all of the appropriate aids and adaptations that are needed for the people who live there and it exceeds the minimum standards expected of new homes. Residents bedrooms and communal areas are spacious and well maintained, residents rooms all have en-suite facilities and there are assisted bathrooms on each floor. Despite its size the building has a comfortable homely feel to it and we found the staff to be helpful, cheerful and friendly. We spoke with several of the residents in the home and also to some relatives that were visiting. Everyone was unanimous in their praise of both the home and also of the staff. People told us " staff are absolutely wonderful", "would do anything for you" and "are always cheerful". One lady told us " we really have a laugh in here, its the best home in the world". We asked about the numbers of staff on duty and residents said that there seemed to be enough of them around and that they never had to wait long if they needed anything. On the day we visited staffing levels seemed to be sufficient to meet the needs of residents and we were told that they have been increased over the last few months. One of the relatives we spoke with, told us how much the health of her mother had improved since moving into the home. She also said she chatted with other residents and had noticed that they had gained increased mobility and improved speech since their admission. Both the residents and several of the staff commented on the skills of the current manager, residents telling us that he would always do anything for you and staff saying that he was very supportive. There are currently two senior nurses working in the home, one has a role as the head of care. There are plans to recruit a third nurse to the team and this will enable increased training and supervision of junior nurses and care staff. We noted that the many of the staff come from overseas and we asked residents if that caused problems with communication. They assured us that it did not and we did not encounter any problems when were talking with them. The manager told us that there are plans to try and address the staff balance by trying to recruit some staff locally. We wanted to make sure that residents felt able to raise any concerns that they might have. They told us that if they spoke with staff or the manager any issues would be sorted out very quickly. Relatives told us that they were also able to come to meetings held in the home and contribute any suggestions or ideas that they might have. What the care home could do better: When we spoke with staff some of them told us that they had not been able to attend a great deal of training. Mandatory sessions such as moving and handling and health and safety had been done but some had only had limited training with regard to the problems experienced by this client group. We were particularly concerned by the staff who told us that they had not attended training with regard to dementia awareness. We spoke with the manager about this and he told us that he is currently arranging staff training and that he will be able to send us a training matrix detailing sessions that have been held. Two of the floors in the home provide accommodation for residents with dementia. When we walked around these floors we noted that there was little in the way of reality orientation for these people. Activities are arranged for them in the afternoon but we did suggest that some thought might be given to putting up things such as pictures, calendars, photographs and appropriate artwork. These might provide increased stimulation for them and also help them to feel a sense of belonging. Having spoken with the manager of the home we were confident that he has identified areas where some improvements could be made in the service and is working toward addressing them. We will continue to inspect the service in line with our inspection programme although we can visit at any time should, we receive any information which raises any concerns. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Since our last inspection of this home which was in May 2009, a number of concerns had been raised, which were addressed using the local authority safeguarding procedures. This resulted in the home being monitored according to the serious concerns protocol and placements to the home were suspended for a time. The local authority are confident that issues have now been addressed and have resumed their placement of people in to the home. The Care Quality Commission considered that some of the concerns raised could have contravened the Care Homes Regulations and therefore we made a short unannounced visit to the home. This is a large home providing accommodation over four floors and when we visited there were eighty two people living there, some of whom have dementia. Each floor has a separate staff team which consist of both trained staff and carers. This gives residents a degree of familiarity and continuity of care and helps them to feel safe and secure. On the day that we went there, there were enough staff to meet peoples needs and the residents appeared to be comfortable happy and well cared for. They were all clean and appropriately dressed for the time of the year and the home was completely free from any malodour. We undertook a partial tour of the home, talking with several residents, relatives who were visiting and also to staff members on duty. We also spent some time talking with the manager of the home. He is very experienced and has worked within the company for some time. He is currently undertaking the process to become registered with The Commission.
