What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: * The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment tool that providers are required by law to complete. It focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. * Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. * What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. * The previous key inspection report. * What other people have told us about the service. * We had a general telephone discussion with the manager What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The AQAA was well completed and gave us all the information we asked for. The AQAA told us what improvements have been made in the previous year. Care planning has continued to be developed, involving people in developing person centred plans, and offering staff training so that they understand this important area. More activities are available and people are being encouraged to attend a local college. New furnishings have been provided in some areas of the home. Staff training has been ongoing. As well as training in care planning, staff have received some training in the care of the elderly to ensure that their skills and knowledge reflect the changing needs of residents. The AQAA indicated that no staff have left over the last year. This means that staffing at the home is stable, and people are looked after consistently by staff that they know. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that overall the home is still providing a good service, and that they know what further improvements they need to make. People living in the home have previously told us that they are pleased with the service and happy living in the home. As part of this annual service review we sent surveys to everyone living at the home to seek their views. All were returned. Some people were helped by staff to complete the survey questionnaires. Everyone made positive responses about the home, and positive comments such as: I like it here, I am happy, and The home cook well, clean the home well and [member of staff] helps me a lot. We received surveys back from five relatives/friends. Again responses were very Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 positive and people seem happy with the quality of care given. Some comments made were: My friend is extremely happy at Alyson house and their needs are fully met, Alyson House is ideally operated for the residents. It is very clean and friendly. I cannot fault their care and concern for their residents, Its a great home for all the people that live there, The staff at Alyson House treat X as an individual and tries to make them as independent as possible. Whenever I visit X is always smart and clean and I am happy that they are being well looked after, and, They look after my [relative] very well and see to all their needs. X is always happy when I visit. I call in without giving notice and they always make me welcome. Four visiting professionals returned surveys to us. Responses were positive and comments made included: The home do well in promoting the health and social care needs for people with a learning disability and associated mental health needs. They work with service users towards independent living, Residents always look clean and well presented, and There seems to be a consistency of staff. One less positive comment was that the home could sometimes improve communication and let nurses know if residents routines change, to save wasted journeys. We only received a survey from one member of staff working in the home. They said that they received training to undertake their role. On surveys people said that they knew how to make a complaint. The AQAA indicated that the complaints procedure is highlighted to people and explained to residents. The AQAA said that three complaints had been received and managed by the home in the last 12 months. Since the previous inspection no issues have been raised with us, (CQC), about the service. When we spoke to the manager they felt that things were going well. From findings at the last inspection, comments on surveys and discussion with the manager it is evident that Alyson House continues to be robustly managed in a safe and effective manner. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. They have shown that they have managed issues and situations well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide positive outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 20th November 2011 However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
