We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: (1) The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. (2) Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. (3) What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. (4) The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. (5) Relevant information from other organisations. (6) What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? We received the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) before this service review, which gave us good information and it was very detailed with clear evidence of how Appleton Lodge has continued to improve since the last key inspection. Meanwhile, completed questionnaires were returned to the Commission by three residents and two members of staff, all of which contained very positive responses and constructive additional comments. Both staff confirmed in their responses that they know what to do if someone has any concerns. All three residents confirmed they know how to make a complaint and who to talk to if they are not happy. Some of the additional comments made by the residents included: ...comfort after being in hospital... ...there is a good resident/staff relationship... ...Id like more activities like ten pin bowling... ...it helps me feel welcome... Some of the additional comments made by the staff include: Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 ...Appleton Lodge is a very happy home. The atmosphere is lovely (very relaxed), staff and residents get along very well. The staff are excellent and the residents are caring towards others (including staff members)... ...it would be difficult to better what is already offered at Appleton Lodge... ...it caters for everybodys needs and everyone gets on well. Its like one big happy family and its a very comfortable place to work... ...more entertainment if possible... ...Appleton Lodge is a very warm and friendly residential home. People are always pleased with their stay and social workers and other staff such as CPNs and doctors are impressed with the running of the home. Its an enjoyable place to work... In respect of how the staff and management at Appleton Lodge take the views of people using the service into consideration, it was stated in the AQAA that residents meetings are held regularly, during which group discussions are held. Also, an independent professional completes an in-depth Quality Assurance Report on an annual basis, which includes the views of the residents, staff and stakeholders. Care plans are also reviewed regularly and residents are actively involved in the interviewing process for prospective staff members. As a result of listening to the people living at Appleton Lodge, some of the changes that have taken place have been confirmed as appointing a staff member to ensure that residents meetings happen as scheduled each month, they are structured and all minutes are recorded and handed out. A website has also been developed during the past year, to promote the home and make the information easier to access. Areas in which Appleton Lodge does well were stated in the AQAA as: Care plans are constructed in partnership with residents in order to maximise self-esteem, confidence, independence and social inclusion. We support service users in every aspect of their lives and believe in individual choice, privacy, dignity and autonomy. Our policies and procedures are proactive, dynamic and we feel that the home complies with all statutory requirements. Areas in which Appleton Lodge has improved in the last twelve months were stated in the AQAA as: The ongoing refurbishment programme has achieved greater comfort, with modern facilities to use (bathrooms, showers etc). Our policies and procedures have been updated and expanded to reflect new legislation and guidance. The targets that the independent quality assessment indicated last year have been achieved to both staffs and residents satisfaction. Our website is now online, providing information on the home to new and existing service users. We complete our own PAT testing as new equipment is purchased. We have found new training opportunities to develop our staff team and we are now able to respond quicker to changing circumstances, so that they are reflected in care plans and other documentation. Areas in which Appleton Lodge could do better were stated in the AQAA as: The Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 refurbishment is an ongoing programme and we aim to complete this by 2011. We will commission a review of the format of our care plans, to ensure they are current, up-todate and encompass all needs of clients, whether existing or proposed. We will continue to develop our staff training, seeking opportunities as they develop. The new menu plan, as devised with input from the residents and dietician specialists, will begin in January 2010. At the same time, we will complete our annual quality assurance review as well as updates to policies and procedures with the opportunity for residents to take an active role in this process. Meanwhile, policies and procedures were noted as having been reviewed in September 2009. It was noted from the AQAA that Appleton Lodge have not received any formal complaints during the last twelve months, although two informal complaints (both concerning disagreements between residents) were acknowledged and resolved appropriately to the residents satisfaction. All care staff have completed Norfolk County Councils Safeguarding Adults course. Over all, the Commissions opinion following this Annual Service Review, is that Appleton Lodge continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people living there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no changes to our inspection schedule following this review and a key inspection will be carried out by 3rd February 2012. However, the service can be inspected at any time if the Commission have any concerns about the quality of the service or safety of the people using the service.
