This was an unannounced visit to follow up a requirement made at the previous inspection. We found that the requirement was met and the process of staff recruitment has been improved although further improvement is required. We found that staff are usually employed when the full criminal record check and references have been returned. There are occasions when staff are employed with the Protection of Vulnerable Adults check this is called the POVA first check. We recommend that when staff are employed on a POVA first basis a risk assessment is completed that detail actions that have been taken to minimise the risk to vulnerable people living at the home. We saw that the service had criminal records checks for people which had been undertaken on behalf of other establishments and not Arboretum Nursing Home. The service must ensure that a criminal record check is undertaken by the service for each new prospective member of staff as the transfer of a criminal records check is no longer appropriate to safeguard people living at the home. What the care home does well: What they could do better: If you want to know what action the person responsible for this care home is taking following this report, you can contact them using the details set out on page 2.
