What the care home does well We looked at a care plan for one of the most recently admitted people. In the main it was well written and contained detailed information about the way in which the person`s needs should be met by staff working at the home. We looked at activities, people have opportunities to go out socially and to go on holidays. Trips have included outward bound courses, York, Scarborough and Blackpool. Some of the people living at Arran house go out alone. This is risk assessed to ensure people`s safety. The home also has a volunteer who chairs resident meetings and helps plan activities. We looked at the environment. The home has a communal kitchen/diner, lounge and bathrooms. There is also a quiet room on the second floor for people to relax. There are plans in place to continue upgrading the home and these were seen and discussed with the manager during the inspection. The home is well furnished and decorated with a number of communal areas for people to spend time. We looked at training records. Training includes fire safety, Mental Capacity Act (MCA), safe handling of medicines, abuse awareness, challenging behaviour and infection control. The home now has a matrix to plan training and identify any gaps. The home are also planning to use an online tool which will help make training more tailored to the needs of each individual staff member. We looked at the support that staff receive, there are staff meetings, supervision sessions and keyworker meetings. the manager said that the home operates an `open door` policy and this was evident throughout the inspection. One person living at the home said, "I go to college, I love it here. I have my own CD, TV, DVD and I have my own shower". Comments from people living at the home in surveys include, "It`s clean and tidy, nice staff", "They make life nice, nice meals and my clothes are washed nicely" and "Everything, living here is lovely".Comments from staff include, "The home provides a warm and friendly, homely environment which is welcoming. The residents here get good suuport", "We look after people to a very high standard" and "The residents here are well cared for and happy living in a safe environment". What the care home could do better: The care plan which we looked at had not been reviewed, it made reference to a district nurse visiting twice daily, yet an additional part of the care plan states that the nurse no longer calls. The home should ensure that care plans are reviewed reguarly and kept up to date. The home does not currently have a registered manager. The acting manager is in the process of applying for this position. The current certificate of registration needs updating as it contains the wrong information. When looking at a care plan it became apparent that an incident had taken place which had not been notified to the Commission. The Commission must be notified of serious incidences especially where it effects the safety or well being of any service user. The acting manager said that this had been an oversight and our records show that notifications are normally made. One staff member said in a survey that they would like more support for staff.
